How can I put my daughters hair in "rags" ??

When I was little, my Mum put my hair in "rags" to go to bed, then I'd wake up with lovely ringlets.
Does anyone know how to do that? I'd love to do it for my daughter for christmas day.

IIRC, you need strips of rag, about (say) 20cm long. Section the hair, wind each section round the middle of one of the rags, then tie the ends of the rag together.

But I haven't done it for well over twenty years, so my memory may be at fault. I seem to remember it was pretty uncomfortable to sleep in, though.

how to curl hair with rags

PortAndLemon · 29/11/2008 20:05

(obviously, do that for each section of hair)

Thank you I remember it being uncomfortable to sleep in too, and she dosn't need any excuses not to sleep.
I think I'll use the hair dryer, or do it on christmas eve morning.

I've done it for my daughter - as she wanted to look like Shirley Temple - but ended up with what a friend described as a Meg Ryan look, rather than ringlets.

Cut some cotton fabric (old shirt etc) into strips about 1 inch wide and 8 inches long.

Divide your daughter's hair into sections - I think I did about 10-12. It works better when hair is damp rather than sopping wet.

Roll the strand of hair around the middle of a cotton strip (it seems to work better if you start from the end of the hair and work up and if you twist the strand once or twice so that it sticks together)

Tie the ends of the cotton strips together.

Unravel in the morning!

I also bought some bendy foam curlers from Superdrug and Boots. They're less fiddly but because they're bulkier they give looser curls - the rags give more of a Shirley Temple effect!

Hope this makes sense ...

Ooops! Extremely slow typist.

There's this

Not sure where you get the 'Rageaze' from but I'm sure bits of rag are just the same.

I can remember my grandma doing mine when I used to go and stay with her

i remember my mum plaiting my hair so i'd look all bushy in the morning. i loved my crimper too

mummyloveslucy · 29/11/2008 20:42

That's great, it says you only need to leave them for one hour. My Mum made me sleep with mine.

Mmm. I'm sure it'd work in an hour on adults' hair, but my daughter's very fine hair took several hours to develop any sort of curl.

mummyloveslucy · 29/11/2008 20:52

My daughters hair is quite thick and usually ringlets by it's self but it's loosing it's curl as it gets ever thicker.

My mum used to run mousse through mine whilst wet before putting the rags in, to help it hold better, stays longer aswell. Used to get a couple of days curls when she did mine

TsarChasm · 29/11/2008 20:57

Those rageaze things seem to be moist or coated in smoething (like wet wipes?{grin})

Maybe if you soaked the rags in something like setting lotion and left them in for a few hours you'd get a good result.
