Congratulations Mumsnet - 10,000 members!

What a milestone! I just wish that Mumsnet had been around when I was first pregnant or when the children were babies but I only discovered it last year. I didn't even discover the internet until after dd was born and even then I only used it to check for e-mails because Broadband wasn't available to the ordinary person then. How things change.

All I want to know now is how on earth do I stand any chance of winning one of these competitions when there are 9,999 other members all wanting the prize too?

Congratulations. Do think it a bit poor that so few of those registered have actually parted with any cash though. If you use this site regularly then you should give what you can - something is better than nothing.

Maybe access should be free for the first month and then only available by subscription? I appreciate that the whole point of this site is that it should be accessible to all - but it won't be accessible to any of us if it goes under through lack of funding.

And no, I am not on the payroll. (Does one even exist?)

Ghosty · 11/03/2003 01:20

I agree Willow ... I was very surprised to see that out of 10,000 members only 350 have stumped up any money ...
There can't be 10,000 people who use it regularly though ... have they worked out how many there are who are regular users (sounds like a drug ... )?

I wish I had found mumsnet when I first had ds and suffered from PND. I think the site is wonderful, again can't believe that so few have paid though.

justiner · 11/03/2003 09:08

For those members who have requested not to receive mails from us, here's a copy of a mail that went out last night.

Dear Mumsnet member,
This is just a quick mail to share a bit of good news: there are now 10,000 of you. According to the omniscient Tech, we quietly edged past the magic 10,000 mark when katierocket signed on as a member at 2:30pm on 23rd Jan. (How does he know these things?) It seemed too important an occasion to let pass quietly so we thought we'd let you know - and, more importantly, thank you all once again for making Mumsnet what it is.

Of course nowhere is the old saying about "lies, damned lies and statistics" truer than on the web. Some of you will remember the lively discussions on the talk boards last year about whether it made sense to make joining mumsnet a sufficient condition for competition entry. Wasn't that encouraging cynical types to join purely to enter our competitions, never to be seen again, some wondered. We thought that was a good point and since then we've used other entry requirements. We think we've filtered most of the prize hunters out of our membership records now. So we're pretty confident there really are approaching 10,000 bona fide members, give or take a few hundred.

And though you are the Mumsnet users dearest to our hearts because most of you have contributed to the site's content in some way - whether with a late night query about teething or a withering review of a Corsican hotel - you are in many ways the tip of an iceberg. We know that in any given month around 25,000 different people look at parts of the site. Many will hang around the talk boards like wallflowers for months before plucking up the courage to join and contribute; many will never join. That's fine by us: as long as there are plenty of users contributing to our discussions and sending us reviews, we think the more people who benefit from their (your) wisdom, the merrier. All of which is a rather long-winded way of telling you what you probably know already if you have visited the site recently: Mumsnet is humming. The Sunday Times acknowledged as much last month when they named us as one of their 50 best sites on the net, describing Mumsnet as an "exceptionally lively, welcoming site for both prospective and experienced mothers that never preaches but offers practical relevant help from parents who are going through similar experiences."

There's more good news too. Mums on Babies, the first of a series of Mumsnet parenting guides, which will be published on March 30 (Mothers Day), is already attracting lots of media interest. The Times magazine, which ran a feature about Mumsnet's first six months in 2000, is going to run a lengthy article on the subsequent progress of the site and a number of other magazines, including Good Housekeeping, Junior Pregnancy and Baby and Prima Baby, have already said they want to cover the book and the story of the site behind it.

If the picture is pretty rosy on most fronts, it's still pretty grey on the financial one. Thanks to the 350 or so of you who have (most generously) become voluntary paid subscribers, and a slight pick-up in advertising, the future of the site is secure for the next few months. But our accountant still looks distinctly peaky when he tots up our balance sheet. So while we're writing mostly to thank you for your support in getting this far we'd also like to urge you once more to do what you can to keep the wolf away from Mumsnet's door.

What can you do? We'll if you've already subscribed (see www.mumsnet.com/s/supporters for the list of subscribers), badger someone else to take the leap. And if you haven't, ask yourself whether it's altogether fair that a relatively small number of members are stumping up to keep the site running for everyone else. If you think the answer is no then subscribe now by going to www.mumsnet.com/s/mn.SubsIntro to subscribe.

While we're at it, make sure to buy at least one copy of Mums on Babies - they'll be available from the site at a discount to members from the end of this month. Better still, buy two. We'll also be asking you to spread the word about the book by printing out posters from the site and pinning them up anywhere and everywhere mums meet (but more of that later). And if you can't manage any of those things, please, please just spread the word.

Thanks once again for all your support,
Justine, Carrie and Rachel

The 10,000 members is great - but only 350 subscribing is not! Blimey, it's terrible in fact. Especially if 25,000 visit every month. What about sending out emails to all those who regularly visit but haven't paid anything? Aggressive I know, but it doesn't seem unreasonable to try to prick some consciences. I will pay again shortly since it's ages since I made my small contribution. Looking forward to the book too.

sis · 11/03/2003 10:07

WWW, that is a good point as I can't remember when I paid my subscription, will mumsnet send a reminder after one year?

Bobbins · 11/03/2003 10:14

Yep, I'd be more than willing to subscribe annually.A reminder of when its due would be helpful, but if its not possible i'll contribute again anyway.

Tetley · 11/03/2003 10:21

I agree with all the points raised here on the subscription. Its unbelievable that so few people have paid, especially when it was only done as a 'give as much as you can afford' so wasn't pushing people into paying through the nose.

tigermoth · 11/03/2003 10:36

wow, with 10,000 mmembers there must be a fair few lurkers out there.

Lurkers or talkers, whoever you are, you know you love mumsnet or else you wouldn't be here. So please give something! today!!

PS You can keep it secret - your nickname doesn't have to appear on the list of subscribers.

breeze · 11/03/2003 10:38

I too would urge people to contribute. I am a sahm and we do not have a lot of money, but I send in as mouch as I could afford. Even a small amount from most people would make a huge difference.

lucy123 · 11/03/2003 10:49

and there was me thinking I was part of a small exclusive club...

But really 10,000 members is excellent, although like the others say a 3.5% subscription rate is a bit rubbish. Maybe there should be a subscribers only board so we can all pat each other on the back?

IDismyname · 11/03/2003 11:04

Ermmmm... it's 351 now

NQWWW · 11/03/2003 11:08

Feeling very guilty - will soon be 352....

kaz33 · 11/03/2003 11:21

And 353....

Toots · 11/03/2003 13:11

Ashamed it's taken me so long, but I've subscribed now too. Now I can start tutting at those who haven't!

If access was available for subscribers only it defeats the object of remaining anonymous if you choose.

Clarinet60 · 12/03/2003 16:42

The thought of the lurkers is quite spooky actually.

Congrats mumsnet. I hope it keeps going, because I can't imagine life without it now.

katierocket · 12/03/2003 17:07

oh lord, I didn't even know there was a voluntary subscription!! shows how much attention I was paying. I will happily subscribe.

whellid · 12/03/2003 17:16

like WWW's idea of a reminder as I have no idea when I paid the small sum I did. Quite shocked at the low numbers subscribing though, as I felt guilty about not paying after about a month of using the site.
