If not, what did you do with your day?

No, I'm a SAHM, I don't get sick days.

Ewe · 18/11/2008 22:17

I called in sick week before last and it was genuine, I had a nasty tummy virus.

However, I was off genuinely sick for a few days and tagged on an additional day that I didn't need off sick but I had lost my passport and needed the day to go to passport office

Why? Are you planning a sickie and looking for ideas? If so, I don't recommend sitting in the passport office, very dull

EachPeachPearMum · 18/11/2008 22:17

Yes- I was in A&E with a tachycardia. I was kept in hospital all day, was 29 w pg.
I have annual leave for days at home for fun

Pillow · 18/11/2008 22:22

Soupy, what happens when a SAHM is ill? Drafting in of family and friends?

I was wondering about how common the sickie is. And what people do with them.

You just get on with it, Pillow.

I never took a sickie when I was at work though. Seemed like tempting fate to me!

I have never called in sick when I haven't been genuinely ill. In the last six months I have had one day where I went in with a dreadful migraine and left early as I had a "free" lesson. And today I had to leave early as my daughter was (genuinely) sick.

I heartily disapprove of people who take false sickies and leave everybody else doing their work - horrible.

janeite · 19/11/2008 18:34

Congratulations to Janeite by the way; I think that was my first ever face in many years of Mumsnetting!

beanieb · 19/11/2008 18:36

My sickness record in work shows one day sick in one year, however they must have made a mistake as I know I took 3 days off through stress earlier in the year. What did I do? Cried for a bit then cleaned the house.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 19/11/2008 18:36

Went home with a migraine last week. I was meant to be teaching but the trouble is my speech goes when I have a migraine so it would have all come out as gobbledegook.
I seem to be really sick quite enough, I wouldn't dream of calling in sick if I wasn't actually!

SheikYerbouti · 19/11/2008 18:37

No, have gone to work on deathbed because of having enough time off with sick children.

RubySlippers · 19/11/2008 18:39

yes i have

yes it was genuine - accompanied by a doctor's note

I never, ever pull sickies

aGalChangedHerName · 19/11/2008 18:42

I am SAHM/CM so i try not to be off sick. My last sick day was in Feb 2004. I was pg with dd1 and one of my mindees came with a gastro bug but mum didn't tell me till after pick up time when he's puked. Of course her mobile was conveniently off all day

I wa soff for one day,she gave me a bollocking and docked me one days fees so i tend to work even if i am ill.

Luckily if i get sick now it tends to be when i am on hols.

God that was a bit of a rant

grumpalumpa · 19/11/2008 21:32

I never call in sick for myself as I work p/t and seem to be lucky enough not to be ill on my work days although have had to call in a couple of emergency days off when one or both of DC has been ill and ALWAYS feel incredibly guilty and it feels like I am bunking.

Pillow · 19/11/2008 22:59

Someone had suggested to me pulling a sickie when I wanted to do something with ds, and I wondered if people really do it. I don't think i could tbh - i'd feel too guilty and then i think you're tempted to extend it by a day and then it gets harder to go back in. I was just interested, thanks for the responses. I do like the idea of a duvet day that some companies let you do!

I was off sick for three days when I started work on a new ward and promptly picked up a bug, but that is my only episode of sickness for as long as I can remember.

If the kids are ill DH and I take it in turns to be off with them.

BecauseImWorthIt · 19/11/2008 23:54

No. I have my own business and I can't fool myself!

met the fucking chief exec in the lift he looked at flip flops and did this

i couldn't be arsed explaining.

HeadFairy · 20/11/2008 02:13

I've never pulled a sickie when I haven't been ill, too much Catholic guilt

Last time I was off work sick was the first Monday after I'd miscarried at the weekend. I actually felt ok, but had to go to the hospital and felt considering what had just happened I probably deserved to take the rest of the day off and put my feet up.

branflake81 · 23/11/2008 08:47

I have pulled a couple of sickies in my previous job. I never felt guilty because annual leave allowance was really stingy and they were slave drivers, I felt like they really didn't give a shit about their employees and felt no sense of loyalty.

I would never do it in my current job becaus I feel that I get a lot out of working for them so want to put as much in as I can.

Parsleypants · 23/11/2008 08:58

I am about to ditch my bf for this - he has taken 4 sick days this term (from Sept to end Oct) - all for no good reason, three were consecutive. He was NOT ill, told me there was nothing wrong with him. I think it's shocking - he is a teacher ffs! Shows weakness of character IMO.

snigger · 23/11/2008 09:03

After 5 years of SAHM-ing I'm so grateful to get the feck out of dodge and into a laundry-free adult environment I wouldn't dream of chucking a sickie.

However, I worked for a Japanese firm in the early '90s with a draconian personnel policy (Thou shalt have no more than two hours to attend thy husbands grandfathers funeral, anything in excess of two shalt be deemed absence and be marked on thy permanent record) : my colleagues and I constantly threw sickies in rotation out of sheer rebellion against the jobsworthy regulation-worship.

I've never done it in any other job though.

HappyMummyOfOne · 23/11/2008 14:40

No days off in last 6 months for own sickness, only 2 days in past 7 years - tend to work through any illness as only work 3 days now and feel too guilty to phone in sick.

Have swapped the odd day or worked from home when DS sick though as since starting school he has had every bug going.
