This morning I became trapped inside an upstairs bedroom, I had 17 mo son with me. The door handle just stopped working, I turned the lever but the little catch thing inside didn't budge. After a bit of thinking "it will open in a minute", and some futile struggling/ pulling, I realised I was indeed stuck. I started to panic a bit as I didn't have my mobile with me, and didn;t want to be there all day until dh got home at 7pm. (This was at about 9am.) So I opened the window (at back of house) and just sort of shouted for help and for someone to call the fire brigade. They eventually rescued me by one climbing up to the window and another broke into the house and removed handle from other side of door. I felt a bit silly afterwards but wasn't sure what else I could have done, I don't think I could have broken the door down.... It was a bit scary feeling completely stuck and helpless like that.

I had problem like this when I was an au pair - the 19mo I was looking after managed to bolt herself into the appartment alone while I was putting up the buggy

I called the fire brigade too and they broke in. Fortunately she was fine, but I was in a sweaty panic...

I did this in a rented flat while on placement with work, pre-DC. I could actually get out of the flat (fire escape out side window) but could not then get in front door as I had put the bolt on the night before. I phoned DH, who suggested I should go across to my work and ask for someone to help me break in - I refused as I didn't have my contact lenses in and had no make-up on (all in the bathroom). DH then had brainwave and, on his intructions, I got a wire coathanger, slid it down the (fairly wide) gap between the door and the lintel and hooked the tongue of the lock with it. Pulling the coathanger towards me opened the door - tada!

Serious husbandly Brownie points for that one.

I was in a similar situation a few years ago, but in my undies!!

I had just got up and was only in skimpy PJs as it was summer, I went into the kitchen and shut the door so the kitten wouldn't escape - after I'd made a coffee I realise I couldn't open the blardy door and was stuck in the kitchen half starkers

DP had left for work and the phone was in the other room, there was NOTHING in the kitchen for me to cover myself and do a runner out the back door and round to the front of the house.

Luckily DD (then about 6) was quite savvy and I managed to shout her and she called my dad who came to the rescue with his tool kit

I was still in my nightie!! Luckily had ds to cuddle and spare my blushes a bit. I phoned dh and he just said "You'd do anything to get a fireman in the house"!!!
