What did you do with your "new baby congratulations" cards?

I was sorting through some stuff in preparation for arrival of DC2 and found a huge pile of cards we got for the arrival of DD1.

I was trying to decide what to do with them. DH's only suggestion was the cardboard recycling box! Not sure I can bring myself to just thrown them away - but can't think of a good way to keep/store them. And anyway do I really want to store them, will DD ever think they are interesting, and whatever I do for DD I will have to repeat for DC2!

So what did you do?

dd has a keepsake box with new baby cards, hospital tag, etc.

My Mum kept all teh cards from when i was borna nd stuck them in a scrap book.

I used to like looking at them when I was younger

giddykipper · 16/11/2008 21:30

Keepsake box.

I still have mine from when I was born.

trixiethepixie · 16/11/2008 21:32

I have a keepsake box too with congrats cards, hospital tags, umbilicial clamp (I know a bit gross but a nurse gave me it to keep), lock of hair. His 1st birthday cards have now joined it.

You can't recycle glossy card....but while it's nice to keep them - do you really think your children will know half the folks on them or care that much. I've kept DDs umbilical cord stump the clip, tags etc. But I'm not too sentimental about cards, especially as we got four identical ones (I guess there isn't that much choice).

Don't worry though you get far fewer cards with baby 2. Another reason not to keep them I guess! Number 2 will feel inferior enough not being a PFB!

Saved them for DS to read. I came across all my mum's Congratulations cards from when my brother was born and it was lovely to read them, especially as she was long dead by then.

Portofino · 16/11/2008 21:35

Mine are all in "Mummy's Special Box". My SIL thoughtly bought me a large box when dd was born. It is stuffed now, but has dd's cards, first clothes and shoes, her original cuddly thing plus artworks etc. I usually have to cry when I open it!

mumhadenough · 16/11/2008 21:35

I have a keepsake box too, with all his cards from when he was born, his first outfit, his christening outfit, his first pair of trainers, his first football strip etc etc. Its quite a hefty box now lol. Although I don't really add to it much now as he's six, I still put in things like school report cards etc.

We do have a keepsake box with other stuff in. I could add the cards to that, though there are LOADS of them. Maybe I will just keep a selection from people that will matter to her (Grandparents, etc).

Very good point about about poor hard done by second born feeling inferior. Mind you next one is a boy so he probably won't care about cards in the least (if he takes after DH at any rate).

We had MILLIONS for DD1 - I stuck the ones from immediate family in her scrapbook, the others I opened out, hole-punched, and keep in a ring binder.

I just can't chuck anything, it seems.

psychomum5 · 16/11/2008 21:38

mine are in a keepsake box per child.

chequersandchess · 16/11/2008 21:39

I've kept them along with the hospital tag and a newspaper from the day she was born.

Kept all our wedding cards too...

Portofino · 16/11/2008 21:42

I remember when I was about 19, I came back from Uni with then BF. We wanted to go to france for a day (lived in Dover). Had left all paperwork/passport up North. In those days you could get a temporary pass from the PO but I needed a copy of my birth certificate.

Asked my dad. He dug out this long forgotten box, found a copy of BC, plus all these drawings and letters of mine and my sisters from when we were little. it was fantastic!

Portofino · 16/11/2008 21:44

The day dd was born was the day/day after of the Madrid Bombings! Didn't really want a memento!

expatinscotland · 16/11/2008 21:58

kept them all to put in their keepsake boxes.

Yes, in the keepsake box. I got two cardboard boxes for about 3 quid in ikea which are big enough for the newspaper from the day he was born, all the cards and photo albums and stuff. I used to love looking at stuff like that when I was young. Hopefully my DS will too. Alternatively I can look at it in my dotage

sagacious · 19/11/2008 18:38

shredded and burnt them

[disclaimer we have a log burner its not as bad as it sounds]

dsrplus8 · 20/11/2008 01:19

i put mine in a large photo album.

pooter · 20/11/2008 02:13

I made a kind of collage thingy - just stuck them on a huge piece of card and put it in a frame - its hanging in DS's room. I also put in a couple of his first photos. He's 21mo and likes pointing to the baby! Dont know what to do with them now though - can i keep them framed forever?
