Am I expecting too much?

I'm 31 and learning now - am amazed at the number of other people who passed their tests at 30+ - thought I was the only one (Possibly because I hang around with Americans who learnt when they were 15 and who think I'm a freak!)

we need a support thread for us 'oldies' who are learning how to drive.

I've had 2 lessons. I HATE DRIVING. but i'm expecting #2 and can't bear the thought of hauling 2 kids around on the bus!!

my god though is it expensive. (i'm learning automatic [shut up!! i'm canadian!] and it's £4 more anhour than manual!

passed last yr at age 38.

I was very nervous and it wasn't easy, but I was so determined, and i HAD to do it. ex dh was the driver, and I just knew i needed to be mobile for me and dd.

before every lesson, i would repeat a mantra 'you can do this'. I really didn't enjoy the process very much, but somepeople even tho they are dreading it DO enjoy it!! I founf this site invaluable for support, help, and information

I am Canadian too, and I used to drive at home (with the other 4 cars that were on the road in my town )

I always felt that I had never really learned to drive properly, because I didn't know how to drive a manual.

I stopped driving when came here, so ended up doing the whole thing over.

I thought it wouldn't take long as I used to drive, but I realized that a) I was probably a very bad driver before and b)there were many many things I wasn't taught before.

I only passed in September (age 37), and I am glad I did it, but I am not yet the confident driver I would like to be.

So, to OP, YES of course you can do it!!! Get an instructor you like. I had a really fantastic one. Even when I really screwed up, he would tell me to pull over (when safe and convenient ), and we would analyze why I went down the wrong way...or whatever!!!

Go For it!!!

I am 43 and I've decided that I will learn to drive next year.I have asked my DP for driving lessons for my birthday in January to kick start me.

I'm really looking forward to it

Words of encouragement - dh's grandmother passed her first driving test in her 60's.

Just now seeing this thread.. Very late I know.. But since doubt was pretty much the start of the conversation, being him learning to drive late.. And that's not a problem, He probably knocked it out the park. Me on the other hand.. I need a license but I taught myself to drive with both feet. I know sounds crazy but I never crashed or had people scared in the front seat. I think im a great driver .. Since 98. I'm just used to it.. But I need to learn one foot.. Super hard.. Sorry so long..
