I think they are 'trimming' their number of outlets... think it was in the news about 10 days ago.

SlartyBartFast · 04/11/2008 23:06

not woolies

whooosh · 04/11/2008 23:07

Just downsizing-not gone bust......yet.

differentGuyD · 04/11/2008 23:07

Woolies have been having probs for a few year snow- their share price was less than 6p in July

llareggub · 04/11/2008 23:08

I'm pretty sure they are owned by an Icelandic company, so if that's true I'm not surprised.

TheCrackFox · 04/11/2008 23:10

Oh bloody hell, where am I going to get all my Christmas tat from now?

worley · 04/11/2008 23:14

i blame tescos,

liahgen · 04/11/2008 23:15

alan sugar owns alot of woolies actually

twinsetandpearls · 04/11/2008 23:16

They have been in some financial trouble, lack of clear market etc.

CarGirl · 04/11/2008 23:17

Our Tesco has killed our woolies local, really sad about it, hope it stays open, that and a small iceland are the only other chain stores left in our small town.

llareggub · 04/11/2008 23:45

he owns 4% according to the Guardian

squilly · 05/11/2008 19:50

Woolworths make the majority of their profits at Christmas, which makes their retail outlets highly unprofitable for the majority of the year.

I'll miss them though. I like Woolies at Christmas and I love the fact that they used to be the only store open when you went into a holiday town in the old days!

compo · 05/11/2008 19:51

the problem is everything you can buy in Woolies yu can buy in the supermarket these days

whoops · 05/11/2008 20:01

The big store in our city centre closed down but they opened one in a town nearby last week
If they were having problems surely they wouldn't have built and opened a new store

We have a large woolworths in town, i have to say when i go in its never very busy , i have been going in to get 3 for 2's for x-mas, they always seen to have good offers.

It will be a huge shame to see it go.

RustyBear · 05/11/2008 20:15

DD (who used to have a Sunday job at Woolies before going to university in October) has just been offered as many hours as she wants to work over the Christmas holiday, which doesn't sound like cutting back.

Tillyscoutsmum · 05/11/2008 20:19

Woolworths have been troubled for some time. They are delaying paying their business rates due to cash flow issues. Their share price has also dropped to 3.36 p. I'd be surprised if they were still around in the New Year

littlestrawberry · 05/11/2008 20:24

Noooo. Woolies can't go. We have one in our little town, its fab.

Must go and buy some tat something useful from woolies, do my bit to keep them afloat.

stleger · 05/11/2008 20:28

Woolworths has gone completely from Ireland, it makes our trips to Wales and England very exciting. I love Woolies.

camousean · 26/11/2008 16:33

It can't close, it's the only place that sells baby clothes near me!
