Question from a regular regarding alcohol consumption and excessive intoxication

Hi

Reason for asking is I am very suspicious of my reaction to just 3.5 glasses of wine yesterday evening. I became extremely drunk very suddenly and then proceeded to be violently sick for about 45 minutes.

Do you consider this a large amount of alcohol? And, any ideas why I would be paralytic after what I condsider a moderate amount of drink?

How big were the glasses?

Was it cheap plonk full of sulphites and shite like that?

harleyd · 23/10/2008 12:27

were you at home, or out somewhere

flowerybeanbag · 23/10/2008 12:29

Well if they were large 3 unit a pop glasses, that's quite a lot. Were you eating as well?

SoMuchToBats · 23/10/2008 12:30

I would not consider 3.5 glasses an excessive quantity so long as they were small glasses, and so long as you regularly consume alcohol.

If they were large glasses, or you don't usually drink, then it would be quite a lot.

PerkinWarbeck · 23/10/2008 12:37

some pubs serve 250ml glasses. 3.5 of those is more than a bottle of wine.

I'd be leathered if I had bottle of wine on an empty stomach, or drank too quickly.

hobbgoblin · 23/10/2008 12:44

Ok I was out and 'normal' for me is to have nothing to eat all day and evening and then drink bottled cider/gin and tonics/rum and cokes (about 5 or 6) if I'm on a partying sort of night. This would make me tipsy/vaguely drunk.

However, on this occasion I had unusually for me had lunch with pudding and then was drinking with a big meal (risotto) which makes it very odd. I was unable to stand at one point and horribly stick. I would say I was drunker than I have ever been in my entire life and yet I drank less than I do on the odd weekend out on the town. I was deliberately stickign to wine and in moderation because I had work the next day. This just doesn't make sense.

The glasses were small sized but my third was a large glass. All white wine.

So do you think your drink was spiked then? Can you remember everything?

expatinscotland · 23/10/2008 12:50

sounds like your drink may have been spiked.

zippitippitoes · 23/10/2008 12:52

its impossible to say it is nearly a bottle of wine so quite a lot

it depends on the time of the month as well i think hormones etc

definitely drink can affect you quite differently on different occasions

and some wine now is about 14% unless yopu drink lambrini

hobbgoblin · 23/10/2008 12:53

Wine I had in restaurant was expensive, then pub wine which was a pinot grigio

I've had a similar response to what would be a unremarkable amount of alcohol. It happened a few times and I even went to the Dr about it. Eventually I realised that it only happened during AF, could it be that?

Well I mainly seriously doubt that it was drink spiking except for the fact that the person I was with made a point of saying 'leave your drink here' when he suggested we go for a cigarette. Thing is I have known this person for over a year...but there is the rest of the pub to consider since I left my drink for 10 mins. Then again, this was my very local pub and I knew many people there and it is not a passing trade sort of place.

It could well be that for hormonal reasons or whatevr I just reacted more to the actual alcohol but this has freaked me as I've never been so ill. Feel like death at work today but I don't seem to have classic drink spiking symptoms. I remember most of the time I think. I fell asleep after I finished being sick.

did you smoke less than usual

i thinkthe more you smoke the less alcohol affects you

doggiesayswoof · 23/10/2008 13:05

Food poisoning?

ginnny · 23/10/2008 13:13

This happened to me once and I had no explanation for it either, other than the fact that although I was on white wine all evening, it was 2 or 3 different types of white (like you had) and maybe they reacted badly with each other.
I thought maybe I'd been spiked, but like you I was in a local friendly pub.

hobbgoblin · 24/10/2008 17:58

Thanks for all the suggestions of possible explanations.

I still feel sick today 2 days later - just constant nausea and tiredness.

Has made me really wary of drinking again to be honest so I'm staying in this weekend except a trip to the cinema on Sunday.

Zippi, smoking wise, I had 2 cigarettes all evening and my daily quotient is 3 cigarettes but usually more like 7 if a Friday/Saturday night out.

I agree with the suggestions about your cycle. I don't drink anymore (long story) but it definitely affected me more just before my period. Being tired used to make it worse too, and low blood sugar had an impact on how quickly I got drunk.

Personally, I have never felt better since I cut it out completely, but that isn't for everyone I know.
