does anyone know if it's possible to get oil stains off suede?I've got some brown suede boots and spilt a load of oil on them and now they look awful.

Star, you are spooking me out now. I was just about to start a thread to ask if anyone knows how to get butter off of a suede jacket?!!

SoupDragon · 26/02/2003 17:57

I'm not sure about the boots but can't you send a suede jacket to the dry cleaners? Mine is currently covered in little patches of, um, toddler snot at the moment and I was hoping to drop it in and get it cleaned properly.

Spookies?Lil you're supposed to be the scientific and logical thinker round here, remember?Next you'll be telling me your starsignTalking of coincidences,on the same day a couple of weeks ago my dh met a man with the same surname as him and I came across someone in a magazine with dds name. They are both unusual names and dh has never come across anyone with his surname before, and I've never heard of anyone with dds name.
Anyway,Soupdragon you've given me a good idea though, perhaps I should try one of those dry cleaning pads you can buy.Thanks.s

I don't know about on suede, but my friendly dry cleaner used to tell me that dry cleaning was brilliant at getting grease off - AS LONG AS you hadn't tried to clean it before with water. Apparently the solvents used in dry cleaning can "do" the oil/grease, but if water has been put on it, that starts to "set" the stain and make it much more difficult.

That is spooky, Star! DP decided in his infinite wisdom to buy a 15 litre drum of cooking oil from the African shop tonight. A bargain, he said, couldn't resist it!!! He brought it home on his shoulder and was wearing his new black suede jacket. I've seen the oil drums in the shop before and they're usually greasy on the outside - I feared the worst but it seem none has leaked onto the jacket. Otherwise I'd be asking the same question!

Just back on line for the first time since Friday! Our ISP wouldn't let connect to Mumsnet for all that time. Have a look at this link to see what ideas people on another site I use have had for getting rid of the surplus oil...
