Could a smallish cat who does act tough kill a large squirrel or do I have a nasty rat?

AS this morning there was a huge stiff dead squirrel on my doorstep with some of its innards were hanging out. The cats do hunt but mainly small or rather helpless birds, shrews and mice.

My titchy cat disembowelled a stoat once. and she once was found squaring up to a hedgehog, but I stopped her, as hedgehogs eat slugs.

Miggsie · 05/10/2008 21:24

oh, and she also went after squirrels but never actaully got one.

Bowddee · 05/10/2008 21:25

Maybe the squirrel was already dead when your cat found it?

twinsetandpearls · 05/10/2008 21:25

This sqirrel looked huge but maybe it just looked big as it was sprawled out.

I have a small but feisty cat. Vet says good hunting cats have been knwon to kill and drag in rabbits! So quite possible I guess.

Kewcumber · 05/10/2008 21:28

my very small (2.9 kilo) cat has been known to cat-handle live large toads (half her size) through the cat flap and play with them (still alive) in our kitchen.

My mum's cat was a 6mth old kitten when he attacked a flock of blackbirds and killed the biggest. He still has a birdie contract out on him

twinsetandpearls · 05/10/2008 21:28

Tis better than a huge ferocious rat I suppose.

I have put bells on the cats and they are well fed but they have only been here for a while and have never been surrounded by so many wild animals so the temptation is too great.

We have witnessed our cat having a go at a fox that was hanging arounD the guinea pig hutch, not because he loved the guinea pigs but because he probably wanted to eat them all by himself!

My cats have often "seen off" foxes-they are not as rough and tough as they seem unless you are a chicken of course.

Squirrels-whilst Ilove them, are vicious littl buggers and if your cat had taken one on I would expect it to be showing battle signs.

Suspect ti was old/sick or dead when your cat found it.

Squirrel teeth are mahoosive!

FabioAsGoodAsItGets · 05/10/2008 23:48

I myself can more than handle a moose.
Bring it on.

Kew's cat is v careful about dental hygiene and can get carried away with the floss, post-toadkill.

whooosh · 05/10/2008 23:53

Ah yes-"toad-play"-mine are experts too-and they make them scream until I rush to their aid.

There are certain frogs/toads that make my felines froth at the mouth like rabid dogs cats and spray saliva everywhere/

Is it just my cats who finde these particular amphibians?

gagarin · 05/10/2008 23:53

My cat does squirrels - disemboweled on kitchen floor and baby rabbits are a regular spring occurance .

The cat eats the rabbits but has never eaten a squirrel - they must taste nasty.

twinsetandpearls · 07/10/2008 22:02

That is a good point wooosh and neither cat shows sign or battle so maybe they found a sick or old squirrel.

Neither has ever caught a toad or a baby rabbit.

gagarin - maybe your cat has a nut allergy?
