further to

this thread

it has become apparent that there are actually a few people who would benefit from having a specialist bike/trike for their dc who cannot ride a conventional one due to their disabilities.

so my idea is this:

On a set date, we organize a sponsored walk in order to raise money and awareness wrt these trikes and the children's need for them. The walk will be in three categories. A mile for very young dc who might want to, a 5 mile fun walk, and a half marathon (walk or run tis your choice) for those who are fit/mad .

The money raised will go towards helping people who cannot afford to fund these trikes themselves to pay for the trikes their dc so desparately would love, and also to raise awareness. (I never even knew these trikes existed until recently so am sure most other people don't either).

And we'll call it "hike for trikes".

Anyone up for it/want to help me organize?

I am definitely up for it - how about doing it around Halloween and the children can dress up?

SparklyGothKat · 01/10/2008 12:42

Great idea wannabe, great name too. Thanks

wannaBe · 01/10/2008 12:46

Dressing up in halloween costumes might take the emphasis away though - how about if people did it in cycle helmets?

we need to design a sponsor form, one for online and one that people can print to take round to friends/family/work etc.

Also would need to think about venues - you need to have somewhere to start/finish.

really good idea.
but could I suggest a special bit.
could the dc's like dd hwo can't walk do a special sponsered round the chool type bit(hope that makes sense)

wannaBe · 01/10/2008 12:59

absolutely 2shoes.

The sponsor form would not stipulate that we are all mumsnet posters (for those that are afraid of their identities being discovered by friends/family), although I might suggest to mnhq that mn name be placed on the form somewhere given that mn represents parents with dc with disabilities.

But it will simply be hike for trikes. And anyone can join, and I would seak to advertise it elsewhere.

I quite liked the Halloween idea! Kids love that sort of thing.

misdee · 01/10/2008 13:10

fab idea!

however my dd's wont partake in anything halloween-y and i think its too close a date to aim for iyswim.

pgwithnumber3 · 01/10/2008 13:15

Agree regarding the date and kids can be frightened so yep, you are right.

Maybe aim for something in early December and it can be a bit Christmassy.

wannaBe · 01/10/2008 13:15

I also think halloween is too close a date to aim for - we need as long as possible (but not so long that people lose interest) to generate as much interest/sponsorship as possible.

I would suggest a date in january/february when the hype of christmas is over and people need something to look forward to.

What a good idea - I'm up for it. Let me know if I can help with organising etc..

NotCod · 01/10/2008 15:01

.....depends if they smoke.........

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 01/10/2008 15:01

where will they be? id like to help but i dont think i live near any other mumsnetters.

SaintRiven · 01/10/2008 15:35

what there needs to be is an organisation that hires out these very specialised things for people who need them. Then the bikes can benefit many kids.
Unfortunately, every child with disabilities is different. Some need extremely complex machines like my dd, others more a supportive strap. Could any one org cover everything?

SheikYerbouti · 01/10/2008 15:38

Good idea. I can certainly drum up support over this way from pre-school. and other friends. I am willing to organise the "bath arm" of the sponsored walk

wannabe i did a link in sn, hope you don't mind. but thought some people might miss the thread.

BriocheDoree · 02/10/2008 07:54

I think it's a brilliant idea, and if I'm in the UK at the time we'll gladly join in. Otherwise I'll send good vibes from across the channel...! I'll certainly sponsor someone.

sphil · 02/10/2008 10:08

I'm in for this - great idea

hippipotami · 02/10/2008 10:14
