Leaking nappies - excessive or normal?

My son is four months old so I am still quite new to all this and would welcome some views:
today Sam's clothes have become wet four times although his nappies haven't seemed any fuller than usual. He doesn't normally leak urine (only poo!) and is wearing the same size Huggies as usual. Why would he suddenly leak four times in one day? Grateful for any suggestions....

Sometimes their vests may be getting tight and squeezing the nappy, thats happened to us a few times. Also our first always leaked with Huggies, absolutely no reason, so he then became a pampers baby and we had no further problems.

But then strangely enough baby 2 is a Huggie baby, one of those no-logic things!

Sb, is he wearing "new improved Huggies" by any chance? We used to be happy customers until they relaunched them a few weeks ago. We found them much less absorbent and leaky too. You could review the vest situation, as Ems suggests, try Pampers instead or switch to Nature Boy & Girl, which we have found really good. There are also several contented users of Tescos own brand on this site!

Sb - when children are growing fast, you do find that suddenly their old nappies don't fit properly, and may leak. It can take a while to find a new nappy that does work properly for your child - the bigger size in your current nappy may not be right. If you have contacts with other mums through an ante-natal, or post-natal group, suggest a nappy swap. We did this, and it was great. Everyone brings along a pack of their current nappy, and gives two nappies to everyone else. That way you get to try out lots of different brands without major expense. Also make a point of changing your baby when in supermarkets, to try out their own brands as a trial too. Good luck!

We have had lots of leaky nappies since the new "improved" Huggie arrived. I am now using Sainsburys own nappies, they seem to be a cross between Pampers and Boots nappies, no leaks so far. And they are cheaper.

Bloss, I too am a clothie Mum, and would really recommend these as offering the best leak protection, maybe surprisingly, the Nappy lady or Twinkle on the web give good advice and Little green Earthlets are great too. And Kooshies are very useless indeed, if youve ever tried a decent cloth nappy such as a popo softy you'll never look back. Even terries are ok, and the wraps these days are brilliant. Its no more work than disposables, better for your baby and the landfill sites, and you dont end up changing their clothes cos of leaks! And its cheaper!
How much more can you want from a nappy!!
Rant over, Im back in my cage now.......

I also have cloth nappies - 2 types, imse vimse & motherease. Hubbie prefers the latter (has poppers therefore idiot proof) I prefer the former (a bit more fiddly but more absorbent & less bulky). Got them from the Green baby co. in Islington. Had very poor service from little green earthlets.

I now have 2 kiddies , 20 & 3 months & haven't had to buy any moe nappies, so it's EVEN MORE cost effective!! I agree with Bloss and much prefer cloth, although I do use disposables occasionally, more so for the baby.

On the disposable debates, I can't stand either pampers or huggies - Superdrug's own brand get the thumbs up from me.

Eulalia · 10/04/2001 18:04

I am also a cloth nappy fan. Never looked back since I bought them. I know how you feel Bloss when people look sceptically at you when you tell them you use cloth nappies. For me it takes about 10 mins extra work to get them in the machine and then hang them up (no tumble drier). the only time I've had leaks at night is if the pants are tight fitting round the leg - often I put an extra wrap round to combat this problem. Maybe this is the case for you Sb - check the leg to see if there is a gap which will allow his clothing to come into contact with the nappy.

Bugsy · 18/04/2001 12:03

OK all you cloth nappy people, I have a problem and I need your advice. I have been happily using Nature Boy Nature Girl nappies on my little boy (now 18 months) and I have been really pleased with them. However over the last couple of weeks, I have had a number of wetting incidents at night. To compensate I moved to Pampers for nighttimes but this has not done the trick.
I've looked at thenappylady web site and I am bewildered by choice. What cloth nappies would you recommend to keep my little chap dry at night - he does alot of wee then.
Thank you

Lil · 18/04/2001 13:31

Bugsy, I've missed something here - what are nature boy/girl nappies, are they a green alternative to cloth nappies? Where do you get them?

Bugsy · 18/04/2001 14:21

Nature Boy Nature Girl are 70% biodegradable disposable nappies sold at Sainsburys. They absorb as well as other disposables and make me feel less guilty about the environment. The only downside about them is that they have a cringy byline all over them "Mother nature thanks you"!!!!

Lil · 18/04/2001 14:36

Oh wow, how did I miss that - or should I say, why don't they advertise them better. If its so easy to make biodegradables, why don't the other brands. Are they awfully expensive??

Bugsy · 18/04/2001 15:15

No, they are about £5.50 for a pack of 30, so about the same as Huggies & Pampers. But what about suggestions for cloth nighttime nappies?????

Emmy · 18/04/2001 16:56

popolino softies get my vote for nights. uk parents has a cloth nappy forum- they are good for advice! Airrika wraps are very good over said softy too, and you can boost as necessary! Ive not had a leak yet btw.

I agree Bloss, tho I havnt tried the tots bots, I have seen all the excitement about them at UKParents! Terries are cheap and more absorbent than prefolds. the only downside I find (I often use a terry pad in a popo wrap) is that it does give a big bum. However I know Im in the minority in not liking the big bum no legs look! Im just about to try Imse Vimses, Im hoping for less bulk! And fleece liners are a definite must have, nice dry bum!If you look on UKP you can get 2nd hand nappies quite cheap, nice if you are trying them out, as there really is a bit of trial and error involved, with wee amount and shape of baby etc!

Sml · 19/04/2001 08:36

That's interesting about people prefering terries - my preference exactly. Folding's nothing when you get used to it. They are very easy to wash and dry. By the way, the ones bought on the high street may be thinner, but they do dry fast!

Bugsy · 19/04/2001 10:25

Thank you all for your guidance. I have placed an order with Twinkle Twinkle for a Totbot nappy and the Ultrafit Terry, plus an AirRika wrapper. I'm going to see how I get on with these and let you all know.

I am moving over to terries after using huggies and pampers, i had always planned to use them but got used to the convenience. Cotton Bottoms have a good site and brochure with laundry service available where, by looking at it, you hire everything you need you just pay each week and they collect, wash and deliver back.

I found the only way was to keep washing the offending item and the stain gradually vanished. Pamina, I am assuming that the stains are not all over Phoebe's clothes - I did chuck one vest which had a monster stain that would have been visible from Penzance in fine weather. I also found that Persil non-bio was slightly better at shifting poo stains than Fairy, by the way. Ha. Just wait til she's eating spinach! Glad to hear you are all well.
