I bought my (by now old) kettle, microwave, toaster etc because they had the cute whistle function or beeps when done. Now that I have an 8 wk old. Its driving me nuts as it has on occasion woken her up. Having a really hot cuppa when I finally manage to put her to sleep with a slice of toast is more stressful than not.

Any suggestion on what works for you? I live in an open plan flat and would really want to get some new, baby freindly appliances...

Or get baby used to normal sounds? - easier long term I think

we lived in an open plan flat for first 4 months and it took ds AGES to get used to noises. we changed alot of stuff to silent versions (and put our computer on mute!) we even had to unplug the phone we eventually started playing music so that it would drown out the other noises...still do it now if neighbours are having a party
white noise works well i am told ?

Miele brand is famous for their "quiet" products.

Baby's actually very used to sounds and the tv's on constantly as white noise as we live in central London and can't avoid traffic noises-both human and not. Its the sudden noises that startle her. I can't control what goes on outside but would like to have some control inside.
I do own a miele washer dryer for its quietness and quality and would definitely recommend it- much nicer to use than other brands and amazingly quiet although you'd have to be careful about the surface its put on( so as not to create vibratory noises). Haven't looked into their other stuff. Went into Robert Dyas and was told quiet kettles do exist and advertised for that feature. Also told to avoid fast-boil types as they make more noise. Will keep this thread active if I find something suitable in case its useful to someone else too.

To update...
I got a silent kettle (I got a Morphy Richard's one after researching and other customers' review from Amazon). Its much quiter than older one although not completely silent. Its acceptable to me and I'm very happy with it.
For beeping microwave, will get hubby to fiddle with it to silence that feature.

Hope it'll be helpful to someone else...
