I didn't know that children up to the age of 12 had to have a car booster seat, did you?

Have just been looking for a booster seat for dd, who is nearly 5 and see this on the Tesco site. I had NO idea, ds hasn't used a car seat of any kind for ages.

It's to do with height not age. Some very little 12 year olds would still need a booster.

And he's nearly 11.

In Halfords they have a measuring thingy, DD1 was over the height when she was 8.

I think once they get over 1.35m high they don't have to have one.

here is the guidance

Children from age 3 until they attain 135 cm. in height, or their 12th birthday,
(whichever comes first) must use a restraint appropriate to their height and
weight.
Children over 135 cm. in height, or aged 12 or more, must use a seat belt.

obviously children under 3 need one too that is the schools guidance!

The info is every where but if you are not specifically looking for it, I guess you could miss it.

My boy travels in school minibus to school and had to be measured to see if he is tall enough to just have the seat belt. He was tall enough at 10.

Really? At one point every other thread on here was about bloody carseats (change in law was summer before last iirc) Having said that I had to take my BF to one side and tell her that putting her 2yo in the front (airbagged) seat of her car was a Bad Idea, so I suppose it's easy to miss things.

You have to use some sort of seat/booster until they are either 11 or over 135cm tall, whichever comes first.

You'll need to check the booster seat - they usually have a minimum weight allowance. At 5 she may not be heavy enough for just the booster seat - it may need to have a back as well.

Thank you, dd has been in a baby seat (up to 4yrs) until now, she is nearly 5 and started school so we needed to lose that. We have an old booster of ds's for the moment but need anotnher for my car (dh and I sometimes go separately from sep starting points) and for nanny's car.

Make sure you get a booster with a back.

Oh god, do I need to if she's 2 stone? Have just ordered 2 without backs from Tesco direct.

My son is 3, 2 stone 8 ish and tbh I think the ones with backs are better. Mine are 7, 5 and 3 and they all have the rodi.

Mine says 22 kg to be used without a back - can't do the conversion though.

22 kilos is 48.5 pounds.

3 stone 6.5 pounds

DD1 is 5 and has one with a back for our car, and then one without a back for the school taxi and for friends to use etc. I think the ones without a back are fine for short trips, but for this age, particularly if they're going to sleep at all, one with a back is better - sorry! You can never have too many of the basic ones though - just think how many of her little friends you'll be able to give lifts to!

blimey, that means ds is in theory OK for one without a back even though he's only just five. I think. Am sure we measured him recently and he's four foot and four stone (tall with big muscles like his Daddy).

Think I'll stick with a back as long as possible though, it limits the range of head movement in a crash IIRC.

The seat mine all have will last until they are tall enough to go without as the head rests raises up with them as they grow. Fab seat and not expensive ( a bonus with 5 to buy!)

No, I must have those measurements wrong, just checked and 4 stone/4 foot would be obese. Which he certainly isn't - can see all his ribs and everything.
