Anyone know? Do they have to take him to court or can they demand to do this without a court order?

Oh indeed but I think the real problem is that genuine peoplewith licences or without tellys (whatever) aresubjected to a disgraceful and potentially abusive set o standard threatening letters.

I think that if the TVLA say they are calling/taking action they should jolly do so and if they are not they they should leave off.

I got one of their nasty, threatening letters when I bought my mother a TV. "We have no record of a licence at your address..." Yes they flaming well do, as they'd realise if they bothered to check this much-vaunted database, and the TV wasn't for me anyway! Grrrrrrrrrrr.

The idea that if you don't have a licence you must be breaking the law (ignoring the possibility that you don't have a TV) is insulting and they shouldn't be allowed to bully people.

Unless they have changed the law they need persmission to come in, but do have the right to inspect any TV type equipment. So if you don't have any you can tell them to go away.

I think they can then come back with a police officer and a warrent, but I doubt they ever have.

It happened to me once when I'd not long moved and didn't have a TV there yet. He said "You don't have a licence" and I said "That's right" He said "do you have a TV" and I said 'No'. He said "can I come in and look" and I said "No" and he left.
