George's song (to the tune of "if you're happy and you know it)

If you cannot find Osama, bomb Iraq.
If the markets are a drama, bomb Iraq.
If the terrorists are frisky,
Pakistan is looking shifty,
North Korea is too risky, bomb iraq

If we have no allies with us, bomb Iraq.
If we think someone has dissed us, bomb Iraq.
So to hell with the inspections,
Let's look tough for the elections,
Close your mind and take directions,
Bomb Iraq.

It's "preemptive nonaggression", bomb Iraq.
Let's prevent this mass destruction, bomb Iraq.
They've got weapons we can't see,
And that's good enough for me
'Cause it's all the proof I need
Bomb Iraq

If you never were elected, bomb Iraq.
If your mood is quite dejected, bomb Iraq.
If you think Saddam's gone mad,
With the weapons that he had,
(And he tried to kill your dad),
Bomb Iraq.

If your corporate fraud is growin', bomb Iraq.
If your ties to it are showin', bomb Iraq.
If your politics are sleazy,
And hiding ain't that easy,
And your manhood's getting queasy,
Bomb Iraq.

Fall in line and follow orders, bomb Iraq.
For our might knows not our borders, bomb Iraq.
Disagree? We'll call it treason,
Let's make war not love this season,
Even if we have no reason,
Bomb Iraq.

Very good! Just to play devils advocate though, can you imagine if we had waited 12 years to get Hitler into line... What would the world be like then? Surely there is a time when you have to draw a line?

Janeway · 13/02/2003 19:02

when Sadam invades Poland (or equivalent) I'll support the war

this was just meant to be lighthearted - there's other threads on the pro's and cons.....

He's hardly Hitler. I think that's almost an insult to those who suffered and died under the Nazi regime. Far more children have died due to sanctions than have been killed by Saddam. Yes, he did gas the Marsh Arabs but a/Tony Blair did bugger all aboutit at the time. former Tory MP Emma Nicholson, who actually adopted a severely burned and orphaned Marsh Arab boy as her son, left the Tories and joined the Liberal Democrats around this time as neither the Tories or Labour lifted a finger to help them or even uttered a squawk of protest. That was a long time ago. I think it's disgusting to use it as a pretext to kill more children. Not very lighthearted but I feel desperately sad about the prospect of Bush's war.

SoupDragon · 13/02/2003 21:08

Sorry, but I don't find "jokes" about the war very funny. My brother is currently on 48 hour notice to go out there and I don't think there's anything to be lighthearted about.

aloha · 13/02/2003 21:27

I have to say, though, I agree with the spirit of the song, which isn't to belittle the war or those who will be forced to take part, be they Iraqi children or British servicemen, but to point out what a pointless, horrible thing this is and for all the wrong reasons.

SoupDragon · 13/02/2003 21:37

I see where you're coming from about the spirit of it but I don't think it's an appropriate way of expressing it. I got sent this song a while ago and found it distasteful even then, well before I'd realised my db could be going.

I just thought that it was having a go at how inappropriately gung ho George Bush was. I didn't find it offensive because of that. However, I can sympathise with those who have loved ones due to go out there if called. It must be really worrying

Janeway · 13/02/2003 23:07

Lighthearted was a poor choice of phrase, for that I sincerely apologise. The rhyme points out with scathing humour the apparent lack of reason behind sending troups in. By using humour as a tool, it gets a serious and valid message accross in a manner that bypasses the normal receptors for political messages and rhetoric.

Soupdragon, I'm sorry if I've added to your sadness and worry. Please could you explain what JM2PW means, and if the poem really is that offensive to you I'll ask tech to delete this thread.

JM2PW = Just My 2 Pennys Worth.

I don't find it very offensive - I originally just ignored it as I found it in poor taste (even before it occurred to me that my brother might be involved). There are others whose loved ones are going to be much more involved than mine. It was the "lighthearted" bit that made me want to post.

I'm certainly not going to stomp off in a huff (sorry if that disappoints anyone hehehe).

Janeway · 14/02/2003 08:12

soupdragon - I've never thought of you as a huffy person.
I can understand your reaction against "lighthearted" - it was typed in a thoughtless moment whilst trying to avert an thread of pro/against the war arguments and stats. Perhaps I have a bit of Chandler Bing in me - retreating to humour when things get tough - I've always prefered my politics that way (MASH, Mark Thomas Comedy Product, Bremner Bird and Fortune's "between Iraq and a Hard Place" - each taking the subject very seriously, leaving you at least as much stunned and saddened as entertained, and making the information more memorable and relevant than any politician could.

Please accept my appologies.

There's no need to apologise.

Except for the fact that I went to bed humming "If you're happy and you know it" to myself over and over again.
