Where to live near Slough?

DH has had a really good interview, likes the sound of the job, is feeling pretty positive, etc., etc. but I know very little about the area (apart from 'The Office' type jokes) and Slough is not commutable from here.

So, in preparation/anticipation, where should we consider? We would probably rent as nothing is selling and we need a good infant/primary school. We have 3 young children and I would like a nice town to wander around, parks, playgrounds, the usual.

We almost had to live near Slough and we were looking in Datchet, which is quite a nice village and very close.

Otherwise there is always Windsor and Eton, but they are quite pricey...

I was talking on the phone to a customer at work the other day who lives in Burnham - she said that where she lives she can easily nip to Slough, Windsor or Maidenhead by back lanes all in about 10 mins. Property prices look quite reasonable in Burnham too. (She did say Slough itself is ghastly.)

I grew up not far away - we used to go for Sunday walks at Burnham Beeches which is beautiful & there is some lovely countryside all around there. You could also look at Iver & Langley (from my vague recollections ).

Thank you all. I feel a bit more enthusiastic now. There's a second interview looming so we shall see how that goes and then go and do a reccy.

uxbridge, iver heath, fulmer are all slightly out of slough, village type setting but they are only a few minutes from slough town

Hobnobfanatic · 12/09/2008 23:59

Or Stoke Poges, Farnham Common, - all near Burnham Beeches and 1o mins to Slough. Or Chalfont St Giles or Chalfont St Peter, or even Beaconsfield. All very commutable - but pricey!

Slough
Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, Death!

Come, bombs and blow to smithereens
Those air -conditioned, bright canteens,
Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans,
Tinned minds, tinned breath.

Mess up the mess they call a town-
A house for ninety-seven down
And once a week a half a crown
For twenty years.

And get that man with double chin
Who'll always cheat and always win,
Who washes his repulsive skin
In women's tears:

And smash his desk of polished oak
And smash his hands so used to stroke
And stop his boring dirty joke
And make him yell.

But spare the bald young clerks who add
The profits of the stinking cad;
It's not their fault that they are mad,
They've tasted Hell.

It's not their fault they do not know
The birdsong from the radio,
It's not their fault they often go
To Maidenhead

And talk of sport and makes of cars
In various bogus-Tudor bars
And daren't look up and see the stars
But belch instead.

In labour-saving homes, with care
Their wives frizz out peroxide hair
And dry it in synthetic air
And paint their nails.

Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough
To get it ready for the plough.
The cabbages are coming now;
The earth exhales.

Depending on budget lots of nice villages - go any direction out of Slough except down M4 to London as more likely to be on Heathrow flightpath. So for example Farnham Common, Farnham Royal, Taplow, Burnham, Holyport. If you want a town, try Maidenhead. Don't know the facilities as I moved out of area many years back (though DH still commutes to Slough from North Hampshire but wouldn't recommend it!)

Brilliant playground in Marlow - they should all be like that - good clean cared-for equipment, a cafe and OK loos! Marlow nice but pricey!

John Betjeman published his poem about Slough in 1937 in the collected works Continual Dew. Slough was becoming increasingly industrial and some housing conditions were very cramped. In willing the destruction of Slough, Betjeman urges the bombs to pick out the vulgar profiteers but to spare the bald young clerks

edam · 13/09/2008 00:17

Try Denham - Denham village, higher Denham, but NOT Denham Green.

BBBee · 13/09/2008 00:24

how long would your DH be prepared to commute for? There are lots of options under an hour away.

thumbwitch · 13/09/2008 00:38

my pref would be for "nowhere near Slough" but Burnham is nice enough, as are Farnham Common and Farnham Royal; Bourne End is a bit further out but nice. Langley is fairly horrid; Colnbrook not great (some bits are ok)

Dorney is the best village ever (Elizabethan houses abound, whole area is listed/protected) so prob v.expensive but worth a look and lunch at the Palmer's Arms

UXBRIDGE, perfumelady???? Do you have it confused with somewhere else?

(I went to school in Uxbridge - not nice, not a village either )
