Mumsnet or Netmums?

JanH · 22/02/2005 12:17

DD2 just told me that she thinks they are talking about mumsnet on This Morning, only they called it netmums...??? (She said they were saying it was mums from all over the country helping out with advice etc so it sounds more like MN). Anybody else watching? (DD2 has day off, I am far too busy sort-of working !)

Have to say I'm not that keen on Keane even though they're local, from Battle (up the road from me). But Franz Ferdinand, well who cares whether he can really sing live or not with those cheekbones hey Marina?

Tinker · 22/02/2005 19:39

Franz Ferdinand are just very early Simple Minds (yes, they used to be good - Empires and Dance era) but do like and very cool name for a band

Gem13 · 22/02/2005 19:41

I saw Ben Folds Five in concert in the US. They were really irritating.

cori · 22/02/2005 19:44

I found Mumsnet through thinking that a Guardian article got netmums address wrong. Mumsnet much better, rarely look at netmums now.

Cam · 22/02/2005 19:47

I thought more like very early Talking Heads Tinker

Tinker · 22/02/2005 19:52

Them as well Cam. All Art School rockers sound the same-ish

Cam · 22/02/2005 19:56

Yes, new wave punk revival is in full swing

Tinker · 22/02/2005 19:57

And a good thing to . Show those kids what real music is.

Cam · 22/02/2005 20:01

It's getting a bit more real isn't it, not as real as Jimi H and all the really real musicians yet though

Keane · 23/02/2005 08:28

Cam, sorry to change the subject but there is an article in the latest edition of "Coast" magazine about Hastings, it's quite interesting !

You lucky thing living by Battle

Marina · 23/02/2005 10:08

Just had a "more songs about buildings and food" flashback...not to mention "I travel". Before his brains were addled by Chrissie and then Patsy I suppose. Dh scoffs so badly at my early SM affection, all he knows is Belfast Child etc!
Totally agree things are looking up generally...enjoyed the Brits tremendously this year.
Gem - were they whiny and brattish by any chance? He can really play, though.

donnanne · 27/02/2005 20:08

It was definately netmums. I'm also a member of Rotherham Gingerbear - it's a great site isn't it? I think the main way it differs from mumsnet is that there are over 100 sites all with a local angle, so if you want to know where to take your kids on a monday morning, you'll find it one netmums! If you want a local hairdresser recommended just ask on the netmums noticeboard and another local member is sure to answer you. You still get all the general parenting help and support but all the info on the site is put there by mums who also live in your own town, so absolutely everything is local mum recommended... you can't possibly ask for more... and if you did then they would find it for you!

Dawny59 · 27/02/2005 20:09

Yeh it was www.netmums.com they were talking about. Apparently their local sites are really really good, and you can move around now from one site to another. Brilliant idea I reckon. Love

Plus... not causing any offence here I hope... I've never seen mumsnet anywhere else but here! Netmums on the other hand seem to be out there putting the voice of us mums forward and the more members they get the louder that voice will be.

I've just had a look on the BBC website and there is a bit about them at this link

hiya folks, I saw Fern mention netmums on this morning too. I have been a netmums member for a few years and my local site started off quite small, but now it is really busy, i log on about 3 times a week at least, there is always something new... Plus, best of all, there is going to be a brand new coffee house opening for members next week. can't wait!

Munchkinola · 27/02/2005 20:41

netmums from Shipley were on the politics show today discussing who they would vote for in next election

snugs · 27/02/2005 20:53

donnanne - re Mumsnet - couple of books, TV series, numerous newspaper articles, Readers Digest article (thats worldwide that one)

Guess you just aint been looking in the right places

JulieF · 27/02/2005 21:13

Well as you all know I am a netmums site editor for my local area. Fern interviewed some of the mums who origianlly started netmums for the tonight with Trevor McDonald show so thats why she mentioned it on this morning.

I think that netmums and mumsnet are very different concepts. Mumsnet is great for online talk and communities, but at the time what I needed was some real life places to go and people to meet.

Netmums have managed to get some contacts politically recently and are being consulted on various issues by westminster type bods(hence the politics show interview)

I hope that the two can exisst harmoniously (I got a bit upset in the past about a few what I though were bitchy comments about netmums on another thread) as at the end of the day we are all just normal mums doing our best to help others in whatever way we can.

Dawny59 · 28/02/2005 09:05

I agree JulieF......... "we are all just normal mums doing our best to help others in whatever way we can."

JulieF - I saw the thread you referred to, and as you know, the "bitchy comments" weren't intended as such, and were apologised for on the same thread at least three times! I thought all was forgiven and forgotten, yet I've seen you mention these comments twice recently. It seems a bit unfair to keep bringing it back up again when (a) the comments you're referring to were flippant ones made in a joking manner, and (b) they were sincerely apologised for almost immediately by the person who made them. It would be a shame if other NM members saw your comments and thought that MNers really had been bitchy to you or about NM. I'm sure that the person who posted those comments hates to see them being referred to so long after the fact and so long after apologising for them - I know it makes me wince to see things like this being raked up out of context.

I'm not trying to start an argument - I'm a member of NM as well - I just think the record needed setting straight!

JanH · 28/02/2005 09:19

Thanks, Julie - that was all I wanted to know really! I thought it must have been netmums, but DD2 (not being a mum ) has never heard of it but has heard a lot about mumsnet because I tend to be on here quite a lot (ahem), so got confused.

I didn't think This Morning would have got it wrong!

AnnieQ as far as I am aware this is the first time I have referred to that other thread since it happened and I only mentioned it here to bring some context to what I was saying and to re-iterate my hope that the two sites can exist harmoniously.

I can't even remember who made them to be honest. I think the whole thing was through lack of understanding and communication about what netmums aim is.

I did once get upset about a comment about netmums on here and had a private conversation with other editors about it, but that was not a public forum.

Netmums isn't a parenting site so the comment wouldn't be on there.

Not trying to stir, I just think it's a shame to keep raking over old ground when the comment was apologised for.

JulieF · 28/02/2005 20:45

Well, I had not remembered that posting which was ahrdly raking up old ground and didn;t refer to the specific thread.

As I am obviously not allowed to talk about things that have happened about me any longer I think I will leave well alone.

WigWamBam · 28/02/2005 21:58

Julie, I think it was me who made the comment that originally upset you, and as far as I'm concerned it's all water under the bridge now. It doesn't bother me (or anyone else, I'm sure) to see it mentioned again. Please don't get upset and leave over one person's uninformed opinion.
