We got home from 10 days away to find our water tank in the loft had been leaking , ruining 3 brand new carpets, wooden floor, 3 celings and various bits of furniture. We also need to replace parts of the loft that have rotted and put a new tank in .
We first contacted the insurance company on Monday night and a specialist drying out company came out yesterday morning to rip up the carpets, spray an anti-bac thing everywhere, remove the rubbish and leave a dehumidifier (in te living room and it's bloody noisy!).
Now we have to wait until the loss adjuster comes round but have hneard nothing from them since yesterday morning.
Any stories re timescales, problems, pitfalls etc would be much appreciated. Living like this with 2 children will be a nightmare and I'm not sure how long the work will take- sincerely hope they find us alternative accommodation during the work but not holding my breath

Thanks. Downstairs is a tiled floor so now the carpet has gone it's reasonably dry (ceiling not though. Upstairs is chipboard so is gradually drying out. I'm npt sure what the ceilings are like, they're certainly bowed! We only got one dehumidifier, which is downstairs and absolutely huge!

Its not ideal - DH reckons you should phone and ask to speak to the duty adjuster and that will get results. Its better than asking the insurers to chase, as you'll be able to layout the situation better.

Take a note of your electricity meter reading asap.

You can claim for the extra used because of the dehumidifier. Also all the extra washing etc because of the damp and smell.

Good point, I actually took a meter reading on Monday because we just switched supplier so will keep a note of it.
Dh due home any time, so looking forward to handing this over to him

Help, please tell me this story had a happy ending. I am in the middle of a similar disaster - water 'leak' (more like flood), same loss adjusters who never seems to be able to answer phone calls or anything other than trying to scare us. Wrong dehumidifers initially (underspec'd), badly managed project. I dont sleep anymore worrying about this. Our costs are escalating, with no end in sight. Please please tell me it all worked out in the end.
