I missed it too but someone on UKP explained it. Kenny went out in an unsealed boat, the boat sunk and he got washed up on a desserted island. He was apparently hallucinating about all the people he knew and was just about to be rescued when he died of exposure.

It was so sad, and completely unnecessary.. couldn't he have just gone back to London, like we all expected?

His character was the lynchpin of the programme, so I can't see how it can work without him.

Can't believe I missed it, I watch it every week too usually. Btw does anyone think that the bloke who plays Kenny looks uncannily like Marilyn Manson?

It was really really sad and also really really weird.

Now they've done it to Brian Addis on Down To Earth. What are the BBC playing at? Mind you, they are bringing Ian Kelsey into the programme so its not all bad.

I missed it too - Panto at kids school on friday night - does anyone know if it is repeated on BBC Choice during the week? I always thought that Kenny was the main character - personally do not like Michelle Collins as an actress - is it true that he left because of her? Not sure sure I will bother to watch it anymore. Couldn't believe that Down to Earth has killed off Brian Addis too.... who's next??

It was SO sad. DH has vowed not to watch it again out of prtest. Think it will flop without Kenny. However I do think it was quite a good way of letting him go. Lets face it he just couldn't have gone back to London after being on the Island. He'd never leave the kids. But he couldn't stay with the othe chap back on the scene either. Although killing him off was drastic and sad I think it was appropriate. Got all excited when they first rescued him then relaised they wouldn't just drop him off at home like that. Not looking forward to the funeral though! And as for killing off Brian too - well that one sucks!

Watched both programmes over the weekend. I thought that they were supposed to be light entertainment!! Kenny died from hypathermia from lying on a beach all night after nearly drowning whilst trying to catch salmon in a storm in order to raise money to go back to London. Brian Addis died after running his landrover off the road and spent all of the episode lying in a hospital bed going from one disaster to another, finally waking up only to oopps pop off whilst no body was watching him!

What are the BBC doing? It was a bit like watching Eastenders..certainly will be next week.

anais · 10/02/2003 21:18

But Down to Earth is based on a 'true story' isn't it?

PamT · 11/02/2003 07:16

Down to Earth is based very loosely on the Faith Addis books. I think the original series was nearer reality but later ones have been much more fictional. In the last of the books that I read, Brian and Faith had set up a little nursery (plant type) at a new property and I think Faith had gone into dog grooming. The children (2 in the books IIRC) had left home and I think had both gone travelling.

anais · 11/02/2003 20:57

Oh, well I wonder how he feels about being killed off then!

PamT · 12/02/2003 09:31

Apparently whats-his-name who plays Brian had only intended doing one series and didn't think his part could go any further so he asked to come out of it. I can't remember his name but I really like his sense of humour (the hen night strip show was excellent) and I liked him in Dalziel & Pascoe too. It must be strange watching someone else in your biography and then to see things like that happening to you.

Philippat · 12/02/2003 09:54

I'm still really traumatised about Kenny - I honestly couldn't sleep! It's a tragedy if you missed it, the synopsis doesn't sum the episode up at all - it was an excellent look into Kenny's mind.

Actually reminded me a bit of that Michael Hutchance film where there female lead dies of a heroin overdose - what's that called, something about dogs?
