Who has one? How often do you have to get them 're-done?'. Are you happy with it? Does your dp have one - how does he get on with it?

Thinking about buying one for dh...

both dh's and my rings are white gold. my wedding and enagagment rings are still the same colour but his has gone very yellow. we thought it might have something to do with the chemicals he works with - he's a theatre nurse and is always 'scrubbing up' which has probably worn it quicker than usual. is it worth getting it re-coated? i'd buy him a replacement for his 40th next year but he won't part with original - he never takes it off, whereas i do, at night.

Was thinking of getting the engagement ring stones reset in platinum but recently enlightened DH about the ancient tradition of getting me an eternity ring for having a baby. Saw a lovely white gold one....(now just need the baby to hove into view) so at least if they both discolour they'll still match. I think the coating on mine tends not to last long as I wash my hands loads at work.

Rhodium is from the same family of metals as platinum, so that's why you can't really tell the difference when they are both new. I've got no idea what alloys are in our shop, as they come from tons of different sources (must ask next time I'm working!), but I do know that mixing with just platinum gives you a better quality white gold. I would say to rhodium plate at least once a year - then you can get the settings checked at the same time and you won't be wearing down the base metal so much. Washing your hands will definitely wear away the rhodium more quickly. I had mine done only a couple of months ago and one is already yellowed (but that's probably because I clean it at work as well!).

have all white gold - engagement, eternity and wedding. Was told to get them done every year - had engagement and wedding ring done when bought eternity ring late last year... they were three years old when I got them done.( got them done as they looked a little dull next to eternity ring. I wear them everyday doing all sorts of things - very rarely take them off and they do not look bad.

My engagement ring is 18ct white gold, and bar some tiny scratches still lookssilvery and shiny!

My wedding ring is brushed white gold (cant remember the term) and while I won't get to wear it tll June, it came with a thing for free cleans, descratching etc for tje next 5 years.

I'm more than happy with them.

I wasn't told about the rhodium plate/alloy when my exP and I purchased my white gold enegagement ring. I was hugely naffed off when said ring started yellowing at the back, after about 18 months. Personally I wouldn't bother with white gold again. For my next (!) engagement ring with my now DH, we went for platinum & diamond, it wasn't that much more expensive than it's white gold counterpart.

lunavix · 18/02/2005 11:05

what's this plate/alloy thing?

Noone's told us anything like that...

NameChangingMancMidlander · 18/02/2005 11:08

white gold isn't a 'natural' metal. It's merely yellow gold that has been Rhodium plated to give it the 'white' appearance. This plating rubs off over time and you will need to get the rings pe-plated in order to keep the silver colouring.

NotQuiteCockney · 18/02/2005 11:20

I like titanium - my wedding band is in it. It doesn't hold a very high shine, but I like how it looks, and it's very very light. Yes, the metal's not expensive per se, but it's expensive to work, and I don't mind it not costing a lot.

NameChangingMancMidlander · 18/02/2005 11:35

My wedding ring is titanium and my engagement ring is platinum, despite the yawning chasm between them cost-wise they sit really beautifully together. My wedding ring is in a brushed effect anyway so the shine factor wasn;t an issue for us. It's the weight difference that you really notice.

ripley · 18/02/2005 12:11

Mancmidlander, you are right about it not being natural but it's not just a plating that makes it white gold. The yellow gold is mixed with other metals (mainly platinum) so that it should still look silvery without the rhodium plating. The rhodium plating just gives it a polished platinum-looking finish.

NameChangingMancMidlander · 18/02/2005 12:12

Apols. My ring did look v yellow when the rhodium rubbed off, although that is prob just down to the direct contrast of the remaining rhodium plate

ripley · 18/02/2005 12:16

Sometimes the mix of metals is a bit different, causing some white gold to look more yellow and other white gold to stay silvery. My eternity ring looks terrible at the back now and I'm convinced that it has less platinum in the mix than the wedding band which is still nice and silvery looking. Bit peeved about it really!

lunavix · 18/02/2005 14:07

(gasp)

That wasn't in the brochure when I got my engagement ring!

I did think dp had fobbed me off on silver for a while, and the fact it's still nice and shiny would have leant it that way, except the lady at Cornish Goldsmiths checked it to see what carat it was to match the wedding ring to it

Woodelf · 18/02/2005 14:14

Hi there, I had my engagement and wedding ring made for me in white gold which is a platinum mix. Had the engagement ring on for 13 months now and no discolouring at all. The wedding band will join it in September when I will also be 8 months pregnant woohoo!

Newbarnsleygirl · 18/02/2005 14:28

I always used to explain to customers who were buying White gold that certain things would affect the colour of the gold like perfume, household chemicals, soap etc. Hair products are bad as well.
If you were necklaces spray your perfume first, let it dry and then put on your jewellery.
