My mum wants to bring one of her dogs back to the UK from Italy - does anyone know roughly how much it costs to bring a dog back on the plane?

sorry spacedonkey - don't know - but have a step back and re-read your thread title - didn't know that dogs could fly

slap Gwenicks wrist for being silly again

The mind boggles. I thought of getting on a dog and flying as well. Like an air balloon - a birthday treat...

Sorry, not v. helpful!

spacedonkey · 16/02/2005 14:44

My guess is it'll be about £100. Just wondered if anyone else has done it

on a more practical note perhaps you could phone the airline company and ask them?

spacedonkey · 16/02/2005 14:47

and he had to be quarantined for 6 months

gingerbear · 16/02/2005 14:53

the dog that is, not my brother.

I have a vision of said dog sipping champagne and reading his FT in the front of the plane, complete with sunglasses of course.

One of our cats from Ireland was £45 on AerLingus. That was 1998 though but airfares were similar prices to now.

Hello donk,

We flew a dog and two cats from the States, and it was breathlessly expensive!!! But our dog is quite heavy, and they usually charge by weight. I would suggest that you look at the web sites of various airlines, they usually post info about costs on there. Also, the quarantine thing has been lifted, but not sure that your mum would have to do that from within the EU anyway.

P.S. Your mum could just have my dog, instead.

thanks maomao

she's trying to get rid of dogs, not add more! She's got 2 at the moment and realises it was a mistake ... a friend of hers (in England) wants to have one of them, but I doubt she'd be prepared to pay astronomical sums to have him transported back. She doesn't want to send him to an italian dogs' home because she fears the pampered pooch will end up chained outside a farm somewhere

Check out RyanAir for flights from Italy.

spacedonkey · 16/02/2005 15:04

Have done, but they don't take animals (except guide dogs). She could pretend to be blind I suppose ...

gingerbear · 16/02/2005 15:06

donk, she will need all the paperwork in place and vaccs before he can set paw on the plane.
(Unless he is small enough to stuff into cabin baggage)

maomao · 16/02/2005 15:07

Yes, definitely check out the defra link that's been posted.

spacedonkey · 16/02/2005 15:09

Yep she knows all about the documentation and vaccs n stuff, she just doesn't know how much it costs to transport him. I've got a number from the BA website, so I'll give them a call - ta all
