We live on the edge of a market town, town centre is at the end of the road. The town is two roads not particularly big or busy. In the centre is a spar and Dd has been nagging to go to the shop on her own. I have said no. I have come upstairs for a lie down and Dp has come up to say dd is walking to spar. There is one road to cross although she does know to use the pedestrian crossing. I have told dp I am not happy and he is to catch up with dd.

I wasn't allowed to go to the shop at 6 and that was a long time ago.

Maybe it's different in rural areas. Where we live any of the main roads are very busy most times of the day. And even some of the smaller roads aren't that quiet.

It depends on the child. Stalikng is the way to go and if there is no issue then I would say ok. If you work on the priinciple that something 'might' happen you'd never let them out of your sight. I see enough adults who have just stepped out into the road without looking because they are on their mobile or listening on their ipod. We'd never go out with kids in our car bacause we 'might' have an accident.

I went to the shop when I was 6 to get groceries for my mother and that invovled crossing two quiet roads but without crossings.

DD is 7y 4m, over the past month we've started letting her go to the local shop, post box etc. which means crossing the road several times. We live on a very busy road near the city centre and there is one crossing that doesn't have any sort of pedestrian crossing so she has to judge the traffic but traffic only flows one way. She's doing fine and we don't think twice about it now, but we did a lot of dry runs and monitored trips before letting her go. We can't avoid the traffic here so she needs to be able to manage it.
