Mothercare - Boys & Girls toys

I popped into Mothercare World yesterday and noticed that they had labelled some toys 'Girls Toys' and others 'Boys Toys'. Why do they have to do this in the 21st Century? As it happens DD spent her time playing with the Thomas the Tank Engine & Bob the Builder Boys things.
Am I the only one that thinks this labelling is wrong?

No, you're not the only one. I also can't work out why everything in the girl's section has to be a particularly vile pink either.

My ds loves playing with his doll's pushchair and kitchen/play food (although the cars and trains do still win out) so I think a lot of the labelling is completely misguided at best.

I think it's wrong. We discussed this before and agreed it's nuts to think only women cook or care for babies.

dd has pinched all the little cars that ds got for his birthday and has taken them to bed with her tonight. Her excuse 'He has to share them with me, Mummy'

Aloha I know you mean well, but quite frankly I would think my DH was either up to something or had a brain transplant should he ever cook for the baby, then puree, then turn it into little ice cube trays, then bag them, label them and into the freezer.

I would love it to be equal share, maybe I should get DH one of those little kitchens from Mothercare and put it at his side of the bedroom for him!

Babyburp - there are one or two things my DH will not do - ie cooking (he cleans, irons etc) but that does not mean I want my DS to be the same.

I noticed in ToysRUs the other day that they now had pale blue toy vacuums as well as pink. So boys are now allowed to vacuum as long as they use a blue one... Out of principle I am going to buy DS the brightly coloured one from ELC.

Babyburp, my dh (perfectly normal, football supporting sort of bloke from a working class Yorkshire background!) does indeed cook and puree (now mash) food for our ds. No he doesn't do that ice cube thing, but I used to do that and either forget they were there or not label them and had no idea what the beige mush was supposed to be! I think/hope that by the time our children grow up things will have progressed even further. After all, think how much our roles/expectations have changed in the last 30 years. My ds already has a cleaning set, though he doesn't really know what to do with it as he so rarely sees mummy or daddy cleaning anything

My dh also prepared food for out dd2 and said it was quite therapeutic. Now she is eating what we eat basically not mushed up he doesn't like feeding her, he says she won't eat for him. Andas for cleaning you must be joking her doesn't know what a duster is and has NEVER touched the bathroom. My dd however (getting back to the thread) loves playing with 'Boys Toys', she has footballs, cars and is a real tomboy always climbing, we never get her specifically girls toys unless she wants them (she is for Barbie at the minute) but is going mad for a Leeds football strip and loves watching football. I think Mothercare is in the wrong labelling the toys like that.

babyburp · 05/02/2003 11:38

Yes Mothercare are very wrong to label toys in this way. DS often plays with prams and dolls, and we think it is quite sweet. Maybe he will be a midwife?

Back to DH, Scottish army officer, I mean he has had everything done for him all his life!! Then I came along, and he does mix up bottles of feed, even though he doesnt smooth out the top of the measurer with a spoon.... He does do bath time on a Friday evening for me, and he does his own ironing. The main thing I changed when we got married was that he didn't ring a bell to get me to run in with his Gin and Tonic.

Bozza · 05/02/2003 12:22

So babyburp you're with the general consensus all along.
