ds has had a cough and a temperature all afternoon. Tonight his eyes are all watery/gooey and red. His temp is 103 (has had calpol) I am scared it's measles as he's not had the jab. He's being checked out for something not quite as it should be with his immune system at the moment and we were to to wait with the jabs. Should i get a doctor out, don't know what to do. He's asleep at the moment.

Why don't you phone NHS Direct? Their number is 0845 4647. Or their website has a checklist of symptoms you can look at. I've always found them really helpful, and they're really careful where children are concerned.

Linzoid,

Suggest you have a look at the responses on your other thread on this subject. Agree you should phone for advice.

After calling NHS direct and you are still not happy with their answer. I would take ds to A & E, I was in the same position as you, but they where not every experienced doctors. So I took dd to my GP as well (in the morning) very glad I did, dd had a lung infection.

Hope ds gets well.

thanks everyone for the advice and support. I think it's me that needs medication for the worrying!
I phoned the nhs line last night and they had me check for the meningitus symptoms and said that if he was no more cooler or settled after the next dose of calpol i should call the out of hours doctor. He seemed to cool down a bit and slept till 8 this morning. It's me that didn't sleep! Anyway i've got an appointment at 10:20 with the gp. I am thinking that if it was measles his temperature would still be thru the roof and he wouldn't have improved, does anyone know?
Have a good day all.

Linzoid did you check the other responses we put on this. There are early signs usually if its measles.

OuiOui · 29/01/2003 09:16

Linzoid, hope your little one is ok now. My dd had high temperature - about 40 - when she was about 7 motnhs and Calpol didnn't work very well for her. It would kick in after about 1 hour but then only control for about 1 hour before it was up again. The next day we then switched to Nurofen for Children which worked straight away.
When she had Roseola and chickenpox (not togeteher) however, she didn't repsond as well to Nurofen and when we called NHS Direct at 4am, they told us to switch back to Calpol and to give alternate doses - it worked st away and it's totally safe as the 2 medications have different ingredients - it's Nurofen that has to be taken less as it contains Ibuprofen. Good Luck

Linzoid hope he's ok now. Let us know.

BTW, when dd has a very high temperature I have been told by NHS Direct and doctor to give her Baby Nurofen which is more effective than Calpol at reducing temperatures. You can alternate the Nurofen and Calpol every 3 hours I think for 24 hours to control the temp. (Check this with your doc, Im not entirely sure that this is correct on timing). As long as they are not taking two paracetamol based products supposedly it's ok.

Linzoid - my dd is also down with a temperature at the mo. It started yesterday, and last night she was waking up several times feeling very hot and sweating. She is a little better today but her temperature keeps going up and down. I've been told loads of kids have this virus thingy, the only you can do is keep them cool and make sure you have plenty of Calpol! Agree with getting advice though, a good GP should aways come out to see a poorly baby.

Saw the g.p this morning. He gave us antibiotics for the conjunctivitis and the cough. He said it could possibly be measles as this is classic of how it begins but couldn't diagnose it as that because it's too early and he doesn't have a rash.
Not eaten anything all day and slept all afternoon but is now happy with his colouring book so hopefully things will be on the up.
I am always worried about him at the moment anyway because he has low antibodies and no antibodies at all to the hib and the meningitus c, like as though he was never vaccinated. All the hospital will do is repeat the blood test after i've had him re vaccinated.
Do any of you think that it is exessive for him to be ill every 5 weeks at least?
glad i found these boards, your'e all so helpful so thanks!

Linzoid

Hope your ds recovers soon. It is horrible for you to just have to wait and see.

As to the frequency of his illnesses I think it probably depends. I read that on average a person has 5 colds a year, and I suspect this would be more frequent for a small child especially one in its 1st or 2nd winter ( I am guessing that ds is 18 months - 2 or so) when they are building up antibodies. If however your ds gets more serious viruses or infections this often then I too would be concerned. I assume your gp has asked to see him again to monitor the rash.

Our dd (17 mnths) had a rough 1st winter, despite breast feeding, but (touch wood) has had nothing serious recently. Was his last winter as bad as this one? Does he socialise a lot at nursery/mums and tots where he could pick things up easily?

good luck

LizS

Small children get 20 colds and infections a year, according to dh (GP). Especially when they start nursery/playgroup it is common for them to be 'ill all the time'.
