Where should I shop for clothes?

Having come straight from the what are you a snob about thread, I start this with trepidation, but please, genuine question, only genuine answers wanted:

Where do you suggest I shop for clothes? I am at heart a very boring M&S girl but I loathe the fact that no matter what I buy in M&S, I eventually see someone else wearing the same thing. Usually, as I am a size 10/12, they are bigger than me and look awful in it and thus put me off wearing my clothes again. Also, I have a dread of being in a situation where I will meet someone wearing the same thing as me. Even the Per Una clothes can be seen everywhere. Last year, I bought a top and wasn't actually wearing it at the time but I saw no fewer than three people wearing it (in different colours) in the playground in the space of two minutes.

I like Monsoon clothes but find them a bit expensive and they don't always fit me well.

Next I find mainly unsuitable for me as a SAHM.

I would buy in Tesco but again I feel the clothes are too popular and will be seen on every overweight slob I encounter whilst shopping (sorry, still in rude mood from snob thread).

I have been known to buy from La Redoute catalogue, but prefer to try things on first.

Where else could I try? (Don't like ultra trendy stuff, logos, paying through the nose for something that could be bought cheaper, eg expensive jeans, though did use to buy Levi 501s before the shop assistants became young enough to be my children and sneered at me for not being able to fit in to a size 8)

Well I am stumped . . . as an ex 10/12 and now a 16/18 I am struggling to understand this thread.

I guess I have taken it the wrong way. Just ignore me.

leglebegle · 04/02/2005 20:33

Libb - you have me stumped! what on earth have you taken the wrong way? As a previous size 10-12 girl myself and now a proud size 16 whats the prob?

Roobie · 04/02/2005 20:34

Libb? Eh?

beansontoast · 04/02/2005 20:34

the website is pretty slow and doesnt seem to show what they have in the shops at the time...thats based on my one attenmpt ...

feel i haveto credit dp re:zara , he discovered zara mens wear first ...

vict17 · 04/02/2005 20:38

I agree with Libb - the sentence "I would buy in Tesco but again I feel the clothes are too popular and will be seen on every overweight slob I encounter whilst shopping " is sooo insulting. Cant believe all the rest of you haven't picked up on it

Lonelymum · 04/02/2005 20:39

Sorry Libb, didn't mean to offend larger people if that is what you think this thread is about. I did say I had come straight from the snob thread which was all out rude about everything and everyone (in a joking way) and I did think some rudeness might rub off on to this thread (hence I was worried about people giving me rude answers). However, the thread is genuine. I happen to be a 10/12 and I happen not to have any fashion sense and I wanted advice on where to shop.

Also this: "I am at heart a very boring M&S girl but I loathe the fact that no matter what I buy in M&S, I eventually see someone else wearing the same thing. Usually, as I am a size 10/12, they are bigger than me and look awful in it and thus put me off wearing my clothes again." So anyone bigger than a size 10/12 looks awful then.... poor you

Lonelymum · 04/02/2005 20:40

I am not calling any of you overweight slobs. But if the cap fits.........

OP posts:
vict17 · 04/02/2005 20:41

can't believe this. Anyone not a size 10 or 12 is an overweight slob?

Lonelymum · 04/02/2005 20:41

No.

leglebegle · 04/02/2005 20:42

hey! I'm a 14 bottom and a 16 top and I'm gorgeous! thank you!

misdee · 04/02/2005 20:45

i'm bloody huge then. even in my non pregnant state. dont think i;ve ever been a size 1-12 in my life.

Lonelymum · 04/02/2005 20:46

I'm sure you are. But if you saw someone sized 22 wearing your favourite top would you feel the same about it again?

I am not saying I am superior because I am a 10/12. In fact I was a 12/14 until M&S started making their sizes bigger to make women feel better about their size. I still feel a 12/14. On the other hand, i am not apologising for being smaller than others. I am the size I am and I want advice about clothes that might suit my size and lifestyle.

beansontoast · 04/02/2005 20:46

many many many many many women dont need to be a size 12 to look fantastic, its a fact...ignore those who only see 'thin' or 'not thin'

misdee · 04/02/2005 20:47

i'm a size 22.

misdee · 04/02/2005 20:47

tbhj it doesnt matter what u wear, but how u feel.

Lonelymum · 04/02/2005 20:47

Let's face it though, many, many, many people are morbidly obese.

OP posts:
vict17 · 04/02/2005 20:48

Lonelymum - I don't mind what size you are or you asking for advice it was just the way you wrote your first post was very offensive I thought, but then only me and Libb seemed to pick up on it...

misdee · 04/02/2005 20:49

i was just reading it when everyone else started. i find it very rude.

Lonelymum · 04/02/2005 20:49

Yes you are right. Sorry sorry sorry. But have none of you ever seen another woman (fatter, thinner, uglier, blonder, whatever than you) wearing the same outfit as you and gone off that outfit because of it?

OP posts:
misdee · 04/02/2005 20:50

no.

i have seen people wearing terrible outfits tho (patsy palmer springs to mind..............)

beansontoast · 04/02/2005 20:51

nope..usually the other way round.

Lonelymum · 04/02/2005 20:51

Sorry Misdee. I just found the snob thread a bit too liberating I suppose. I came off it on a real high and said something rather rudely. Sorry. Wasn't meant as a jibe at you (or anyone) I have no idea what size any other Mumsnetter is.
