Advice needed on how to deal with stupid bint who treats the yellow zig zags outside school as her own private parking spot

DD goes to a pre-school two mornings a week, which is attached to the local primary school. Every day we're there, almost without fail this woman parks on the yellow zig zags which blocks the traffic and presents obvious safety issues.

I've spoken to the school about it, they've done nothing.

I've even heard her being warned by a friend of hers to watch out for traffic wardens, but she still does it.

I'm nervous about confronting her because her kid is at pre-school with my DD and I don't want an atmosphere. I don't know her name or anything, and she's part of a clique as well, so it would feel a bit like taking them all on.

Any advice?

I'm amazed the school is not bothered. Our head takes a hard line on people who do this. She has written about it numerous times in the school letter, and is often out there in the morning looking for such offenders. She will even take down people's number-plates and pass them on to the police.

Pennies · 08/07/2008 09:50

Nope, no evidence of anything like that happening.

If I took a photo and gave it to the police what would happen?

i would either

Call th police or take ;picture as someone said.

Or type out a note and when no one is around attach to her windscreen. Just saying that she is putting the childrens life in danger and many of the parents there are not happy with it.

WilfSell · 08/07/2008 15:49

large bunch of sharp keys?

bythepowerofgreyskull · 08/07/2008 15:52

we have a community policeman come round to the school about once a term, he hands out tickets & warnings to those parked both badly and illegally.
This doesn't stop them!! I don't know what to advise!

chrysantheMum · 08/07/2008 15:52

put a flyer recruiting for the PTA under her windscreen

partaria · 08/07/2008 15:53

to add to mindermummy - affix the note with sturdy tape on 4 sides so she is forced to read it as she picks away at generous quantities of industrial strength sticky tape

partaria · 08/07/2008 15:56

take a picture of her car on the lines and send to the local press

littleolwinedrinkerme · 08/07/2008 16:04

Is it a 4x4 BTW?

orangemoon · 08/07/2008 16:14

This is a massive bugbear of mine, dd's school entrance is on a blind bend with the yellow zig zags, yet at least 5 people park on them everytime, even having traffic wardens come round only stopped them doing it for 2 days.
Your first step should be calling your local police station if the school is refusing to do anything about it, they should send round a traffic warden and or a community officer.

nametaken · 08/07/2008 16:28

yes take a picture and ask your local newspaper to run an article about dangerous parking.

Also keep reporting to police and traffic wardens.

Right I actually managed to speak to the head about it today after losing the plot at lunchtime pick-up when she had bloody well parked there again.

Love the PTA suggestion (was forced to go to one recently and would rather eat my own children that repeat the experience) - I will do this along with the four sided gaffa-tape.

Anyhooo... the Head tells me that the council say that the lines are not enforcible until signage is in place.

WTF???

How does that work then? I can think of a zillion places where there are no signs but I can tell from the road markings that parking there might not be a good idea. The outside lane of a motorway, in the middle of a box junction, on a zebra crossing...

Please don't tell me I've got to wait for my local slack arsed council to out a sign up?

Do the zig zags outside anyone else's schools have signs posted by the Ministry of the Bleedin' Obvious too? Or this this advice a crock of shite, like I suspect it is?

Apologies for swearing but this has really p'd me off.

I think she could be right, you know. Most people realise that you shouldn't, but as we all know, there are still dumb schmucks that park there. I have a feeling the sign will only state the morning and afternoon school run times too and not the lunchtime one, when there is far less traffic.

Your next step is to get onto the council and demand someone sorts the sign out, before a child is seriously hurt. Be assertive and don't stop until they've done it! Good luck!

andyrobo237 · 08/07/2008 20:41

Pennies - I am afraid that it is true - according to the 'Traffic Signs and General Directions 2002' for 'zig zap keep clear' lines outside a school, you need a sign that states the times that the lines are enforcable. It is generally Mon - Fri 8am to 5pm.

If the school are not playing ball then you need to contact the Traffic Services section of your local council - they are the ones who can put up the sign. Also I would contact the local community Safety officer at the police station - they can also put pressure on your local council, from a Road Safety point of view.

Finally your best course of action is to contact your local councillor - if they agree with you, then they are 'the power force'! If a council gets a letter / email / call from a Councillor to get something sorted, then it usually gets done, as they like to keep the councillors on side, as they make all the decisions!

So if you have got this far = well done!! I do work for a Council, so I know the way to get things done!!! Hope you manage to get it sorted before September!!!

I've got to say that I'm amazed by this. I passed my driving test years ago and remember that the instruction was no parking on a zig zag. This is bloody ridiculous.

I'm so going to have the bitch and will be in touch with the Powers That Be.

Can I name her number plate on here do you think as a starting point.....?

'Tis the same at the local primary round the corner. The idea that they might have to walk a hundred yards is clearly an anathema to them. Even had one parent hoot at me to hurry a long the path so she could mount the pavement to park!

Have fantasies about deploying my own Stinger!

Pennies · 08/07/2008 20:57

Jeez, WTF is it with these people?

Have got all official and have emailed the local councillor as per the advice below.

Will also take a pic of her car and stick it to her windscreen along with a helpful photocopy of the highway code.
