Passive aggressive posting styles

....grr (semi private rant), have got me really annoyed over the past few days.

You know, those long self-righteous sounding posts, that quote other posters, usually getting wrong end of stick and total knicker-twist situations.

Do PA posters think they are engaging in intellectual sword-play?

i don't know but there's one on my local site that i want to punch in the head atm.

cyteen · 02/07/2008 17:11

It's an occupational hazard of message board use, ime. I tend to just read, laugh or roll my eyes, and move on.

Rhubarb · 02/07/2008 17:11

Yes.

I get this all the bloody time! I did a really good post once, made some good points and then put in a joke about St John staying on an island full of magic mushrooms when he wrote the Revelations. Wouldn't you just know that'd be the bit quoted back to me and the poster saying I was implying that the disciples took drugs and spouted crap!

MrsSprat · 02/07/2008 17:13

have they any idea how deranged they look?

They probably spend their lives thinking "yessssss, I win", when actually everyone has stepped away from a serious case of loon-itis

DeeRiguer · 02/07/2008 17:14

i thought that they did rhubarb!
yes dont like
hate when people dont read it properly too

Rhubarb · 02/07/2008 17:15

I hate it too when you make a lighthearted comment and they take HUGE offence at it, just for the sake of taking offence.

And yes they do always presume they've won the argument - they even keep points I'm sure!

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 02/07/2008 17:16

LOL MrsSprat

southeastastra · 02/07/2008 17:16

lol rhubarb, i wonder if the internet is making us a more aggressive society

MrsSprat · 02/07/2008 17:18

"I hate it too when you make a lighthearted comment"

Rhubarb, don't you realise that some people have light hearts congenitally. Please think before you post.

I keep MN points. I have a special Excel spreadsheet and everything. I award myself 50 points i get someone to say, "It's political correctness gone mad", 100 points if someone calls me a troll and 500 points if i can get someone to flounce.

scattyspice · 02/07/2008 17:26

I've never really understood what passive aggressive means

A misunderstanding of sarcasm or wit??

MrsSprat · 02/07/2008 17:33

No, not at all Hatrick. I usually don't post in them, but I do feel sorry for victims, they're usually new or trying to make constructive comments that get undermined by mad rantiness.

I think these posters are completely oblivious to the fact that they are coming across as borderline vindictive and bullying.

Yet if you point that out, you then get turned on and told you have no sense of humour and how it's a free country.

AuntieSocial · 02/07/2008 17:38

D'you know the ones I hate?

They say something really chippy and when they get called on it they suddenly play the victim instead of defending their ridiculous comment.

AuntieSocial · 02/07/2008 17:39

Oh...and also, the bloody ones who do a flounce over something that didn't go there way.

"I'm leaving over this thread"

Get a life.

teslagirl · 02/07/2008 19:56

It is a fact of life that we all say things, online, under the protection of our aliases that we'd never dare say in front of our mates. That's the nature of the beast. It's always annoying when you post something you personally feel is valid or could use some debate- and a certain 'squad' move in and try and assassinate you, en masse. I don't take it personally- some remarks will be valid, some will have come from people whose opinion DOESN'T MATTER. You just have to decide who are who!

margoandjerry · 02/07/2008 20:07

passive aggressive is when you say "well I'm not really interested in this any more..." about a thread you started and a debate you are losing.

It's something that sounds reasonable but is actually an attack or a flounce.

Sulking is classic passive aggressive behaviour, ie, not physically lashing out at someone and yet behaving in an unpleasant way.

BuggerOrf · 02/07/2008 20:10

I hate it when people say something quite rude then put a big smiley face next to it, as though daring you to take offense.

Twiglett · 02/07/2008 20:15

I always say rude things and I always smile, because rude things amuse me much
