I have just ordered some gorgeous Start-rite classic shoes for my daughter.www.start-rite.co.uk/footwear/girls/english_classics/clare.php We went to the shoe shop and the lady tried the Louisa style on her as they are ver similar to the clare that we wanted. We want the clare as it comes in white. The problem is the clare only comes in an F width and our daughter is a G and because of the style etc The lady has ordered a 10.5 F and Lucy only measued a 9.5G She checked the Louisa shoe in that size on her and said it was fine. I'm just a bit woried about her tripping up in them. She dosn't have the best co-ordination at the best of times. She will grow out of the width when they get too small, rather than the length. She has had shoes 1/2 a size bigger before to get more width but never a whole size. Will this be o.k? and if she wears them and keeps tripping up, can we take them back?
Thanks.

Agree with RR, why did she order a whole size bigger?
Surely the point of Startrite (and their cost) is that they are measured to fit your child's feet? Assuming you are going back to the shop to pick them up, if they don't fit, don't buy them.

Gorgeous shoes, I am going to buy Dianas and Lottie IIs for my daughter for the Autumn .

Did you order them at Russell & Bromley?

mummyloveslucy · 02/07/2008 10:57

I'm sure she wont sell them to me if they don't fit right. I could have chosen a different style, but I just love the classic elegant look of them. They are for 3 special occasions as well as just general use. You can't find shoes now that are plain white, classic and traditional. I do love start-rite. I agree, if they are not a good fit then she will not be wearing them. She's had start-rite all her life because I'm very careful of her feet.(even her wellies, slippers and pumps).

These shoes are expensive because of the fitters and the different width settings.

If you just want pretty shoes, go to Tk Mekk.

If you want properly fitting shoes then don't even LOOK at the full range of styles. I never end up with the style I like the best for either child, but 6 yrs down the line after your pfb, you just accept that. I just go in and say, what have you got in 11F and 7G.

Saves Time.

mummyloveslucy · 02/07/2008 11:03

Anna8888- Thanks. I also love the styles Diana and lottie 2. I was thinking about lottie 2 in white for the summer. If the clare's arn't appropreate then I'll order the lottie 2. In the winter I order the Louisa in black patent. they go with every thing, and come in a G.
I didn't go to russell and bromley. We have a start-rite stockist that is local to us. I find that Russell and bromley are not keen to order shoes for you.

MaloryIsCrossWithJohnnie- how do you find them? are they comfie? etc.

The styles all come up slightly differently even within the same brand. Personally I don't see the point of her having only ordered that size as if they don't fit when you collect you'll have to reorder or think again anyway. Could be a lot of money for something which doesn't suit and if you have them and they are worn outside you can't really return them. On the continent they do recommed you go up a size to get the width as many shoes aren't width fitted or only narrow, meduium and wide, anyway, so they may be yet fine.

funnypeculiar · 02/07/2008 11:09

Lovely shoes
Have they been ordered to a store or direct to your home? If the former, just get them to check the fit before you leave, if the later, take into the store & get them to check them once they arrive (wear in the house only before they've been checked. Sure they'll refund if there are any problems.

If she was a good fitter, she'll know how the different styles 'come up' - although a whole size larger AND a different width fitting seems a bit keen to me....

Thanks - that's what I thought about Russell and Bromley, just needed confirmation. I'll probably end up going to London for them.

mummyloveslucy · 02/07/2008 11:12

greenelizabeth- They ARE going to be propperly fitted. The fitting staf have very intensive courses on shoe fitting and there are a lot of tests involved to make sure that they fit propperly. I wouldn't have a clue if I just went in to a shop and tried some on her. I know she's in safe hands. I just need to know that if she trips up and they aren't quite right, can I take them back?
Anyway, if you keep them nice you can sell them on e-bay after she's grown out of them. The classics sell for quite a lot.

My daughter wears Louisas/Clares/Dianas in winter with ribbed tights from Doré Doré and a sticking-out skirt in blue/navy/khaki from BonTon and it looks fantastic - classic but not boring IYSWIM.

TheFallenMadonna · 02/07/2008 11:18

IME (and dd has very very odd feet) it isn't just the size and it's certainly not the width fitting that matter with a shoe. It's the shape. Like bras really...

mummyloveslucy · 02/07/2008 11:19

They are comming to the shop and they will be teasted before she leaves. If they are not ideal in any way, the shop won't sell them to me. I know because it's happened before. I'll just chose somthing in white that is suited to her foot.

Anna8888- sounds gorgeous, just the style I love. I'll check out those websites for the tights and skirt. I love smocked dresses from sarah louise and love jottum for older girls. Jottum is extreemly expensive though. It's either e-bay or re-mortgage[grin I love gorgeous is lovely too.

Not sure whether BonTon has anything on its site right now (sales and all that) but definitely worth it for winter stuff. I get half my daughter's clothes there (super hard wearing too).

My daughter had a lovely dress from I Love Gorgeous when she was a bridesmaid a month ago.

Can you get Italian Pepe shoes in the UK? They are fantastic too.

mummyloveslucy · 02/07/2008 11:51

I've just e-mailed Start-rite. I've asked them wether going up a whole size to get the width is o.k and can I take them back if not. I'll see what they say. I'd love her to have them but not at the expence of her feet.

They used to be called Colette and my DD wore them from 2 until 10! I managed to get her prep school to change to them in brown instead of the nasty lace ups that were like old ladies shoes.

She also had Mary Janes in white for the summer, with smocked dresses, last smocked dress from Jacardi worn on my mother's 60th birthday.

DD -" Grandma, this is the last time you will see me in a smocked dress as they don't come any bigger!"

DD was very tradionally dressed, kilts, peter pan collars, Viyella dresses, corduroy pinafores, and DS had smocked romper suits in all the tartans with cotton tights in green, red and navy!

LIZS · 02/07/2008 15:55

If you are really that anxious about it you'll spend your whole time unconvinced and looking for her to trip or shoes to rub. HO won't be able to tell you if they will fit whatever the size or shoe. Shoes like most goods must be fit for purpose and of merchantable quality. In this case the assurance of the fitter should constitute part of that contract, bearing in mind the measured size is only a guide anyway (DD has uneven sized feet, currently 10-10 1/2 D/E wearing 10 1/2 E), so if she has problems when first worn you should be ok but with your misgivings already I'd look again.

mummyloveslucy · 03/07/2008 19:32

I really won't be waiting for her to trip all the time. I will trust the fitting lady. (honest) She will see her walking around and I will trust her expertee's.

I want to see the shoes and the link won't open for me

mummyloveslucy · 03/07/2008 20:21

Oh, you could just go to www.start-rite.co.uk and click on girls then english classics. They are called clare and are shown in red, but I've ordered white. Good luck. They are gorgeous!
