what do you think of this place

Any one know what to expect - never been to the US, this one seems very cheap, maybe too cheap? What are the standards going to be like?

Yes, it's the price that worries me or is that average?

OK after those reviews I will go back to the drawing board. That seems to be a very cheap one, we can go for atleast double that price and it'll still be cheap really.

It is a cheap chain motel in a cheapish city by an airport which will make it, um, cheaper. But the reviews look bad.

DO you want to stay by the airport? Why are you going to Houston?

admylin · 30/06/2008 18:07

We're going to a wedding and will stay with SIL at first but dh wants a nice family friendly suite or apartment for the 2nd 2 weeks. I'm finding it hard to get something as the web is so mind boggling and I've no idea what I'm looking for. That one is a no though, didn't even realize it was near the airport! Dc want a pool!

Give your SIL a call and see if she can recommend anywhere.

evenhope · 30/06/2008 18:14

Not been to Houston but we've used this chain

UnderRated · 30/06/2008 18:15

You must have a pool in Houston. I'd be very surprised if there are any hotels without one.

I have good friends from Houston - if you tell me the area you want to be in/ nr, I can ask if they have any recommendations.

Anything like a Holiday Inn Express, Days Inn, Hilton Garden Inn etc (anything with Suites in the name) will be basic but should be ok. Or Marriott, Hilton etc will be nicer

LilRedWG · 30/06/2008 18:16

This one looks okay to and is about $160/night/

UnderRated · 30/06/2008 18:19

Have a look on Expedia to compare. Then, when you find somewhere you like, check that hotel's website for rates.

silverfrog · 30/06/2008 18:22

we recently stayed in a Staybridge Suites - can't remember the price, but it was very reasonable.

suite was great - 2 bedrooms, both ensuite, with a kitchen/sitting room. Breakfast was included in the price, but we didn't go (multiple food allergies) - looked reasonable though. Swimming pool was ok - decent enough standard pool.

We'd def stay in a Staybridge suites again.

Might be worth thinking about location. Houston is huge and its inhabitants seem to live on their freeways - pick somewhere on the same side of the city as the places you need to get too! And there's Austin - it is less than three hours drive away and it's a great city. Lots of cool music etc. It's the capital of Texas. Has a children's museum... After a week in Houston going to the Johnson Space Center and a couple of the museums and shopping, you might fancy a change of scene - something smaller and more laid back.

UnderRated · 30/06/2008 21:01

Yes, if you have spare time, Austin is fabulous.

admylin · 02/07/2008 21:20

Thanks everyone for the tips. Have managed to convince dh that we should wait and stay the first few days with SIL (even though he isn't keen, but she is!) and then we can find something we like the look of by driving round. Will definately try Austin too and hope to get a trip to Galveston to see the coast line. Very worried about the heat but I hear they are prepared with AC!

OP posts:
UnderRated · 03/07/2008 00:41

Oh, there will be AC everywhere. They know how to deal with heat in Texas!

I stayed here on business, wasn't cheap, but lovely.

this place was down the road and possibly more family friendly.

Both are near fabbo shopping centre - The Galleria, which also has a JW Marriott hotel in it.

This bit of Houston is a 15-20 min car ride from downtown.

was similarly dubious, but was lovely boutiquey place. I think it was a play on 'derrick' being Texan an'all. My colleague still took the piss though!

A Residence Inn is great for a long stay like that - you get a proper kitchen, living area, dining table and bedroom(s). They'll even do your grocery shopping if you give them a list and leave it all in the fridge. Mostly they have breakfast, and sometimes a fixed dish dinner included (kind of a buffet thing).
