Entertaining just the one DC in the holidays - do you find it hard or not?

I posted this in the "Site Stuff - what to do with the kids in the holidays" thread, but thought I would put it in a separate thread as well as it got me thinking. Those of you with just the one DC - do you find you have to work harder at it in the school hos, especially setting up playdates with friends? DS is 8 and I actually think he will miss being at school and the whole social side.

YES!! DS is only 5 and has no friends at school really.. it's incredibly hard

Hi LewisFan, that's tough on you and your DS, we find ourselves hanging around playgrounds alot when no school friends are around, or I've made arrangements to meet someone with a DS and they've let me down (grr).

I have 1 ds who is 6, but I work 3 days a week in the school hols so I don't find it hard. On my days off we meet up with friends or have days out.

Of courese he loves days out with mates and things but I also love just spending time with ds. Just me and him. I adore it in fact.

I can't wait for teh summer hols.

I would probably feel different if I were at home with him for al of the 6 weeks though...

I've been collecting vouchers to get us in the local play farm thingy so that's 4 or 5 days out sorted, we have the Downs quite local too so can go kite flying and have the park at the end of the road with the river - might get a cheap net and do some fun with canal water stuff!

TBH I usually have great plans to meet up with other friends, swap children etc - and before I know it its the end of the holidays & none of it has happened. I'm not sure what we do do though - never very much, just hanging out. The only time that it can really drag is if the weather is really bad so dd is stuck inside (the same is true at the weekend - what I would really like is school on rainy days only, surely plenty of them in Wales for children to get a decent education).
Our families are quite a long way away though so we usually either go to them or have visitors for some of the time in the longer holidays.

DD is 6 and an only child.

I work one day a week and DD will either go to a friend's house or to a grandparents for the day. So she is entertained then.

We are also going away with friends, with children, for 10 days so that is covered too.

Rest of time will be filled with play dates at our place or at friend's houses (sometimes inc adults/sometimes on her own), days out and home based activities - but essentially lots of meeting up with friends will be involved.

We've got a week away, a week for ds in playscheme (he's 9), and a list of people we want to see, places we want to go and stuff we want to do around the house. Tbh six weeks isn't enough and like Takver we always struggle to fit everything in.
