long story, but we brought dp a new (used car) last year, then we have had family issues (mil past away) and we needed to retax the car for june , but realised we still didnt have the logbook back in dp's name, so we sent the little slip off etc and have had to wait for them to confirm it had been sold etc etc, which took longer than norm as the person we brought it from turned out not to be the registed owner (its been a headache i tell you)and had to wait for the dvla to track it down as they never sent the logbook off to change the owner details.

SO the log book arrived today and as we are desperatley struggling without dp's car (we work 15 miles away from home, both in opp directions from home and there are no bus routes to our works) so i have had to tax the car and need to know if we can drive it tomorrow now its all paid for, even though we are just waiting for the disc to arrive.

i would have thoough it should be alright, as we have a refference number if we get stopped, but im not sure, anyone else had this happen , taxed car bhut no disc??

god, sorry that was a long post

I have done this before (a few times) and always been told that it is okay to drive the car straight away.

I think technically it is illegal not to display a current tax disc, but if they wanted to prosecute you they would check first to see if the car was taxed, which it is, so you're covered.

They could then do you for not displaying a current tax disc, but they couldn't do you for the car not being taxed.

They wouldn't bother, would they?

I drove my car when I forgot to tax it, and whilst waiting for the tax disc to arrive, put a copy of the printed receipt on the dashboard, in case of over zealous traffic wardens or police.

thats a good idea about the print out, didnt think of that. although if dp startd driving into town and parking in the shopp[ing mall i would wonder whats going on. luckily he works out in the sticks so no traffic wardens (unless they are very lost!!)

thankyou

well dp drove his car to work yesterday and ogt pulled over by the police for not displaying a tax disc!!
he told the police officer he had a refernce number but he wasnt interested and said it should be an onthe spot fine of £60!!

but at his discretion he decided to let dp off,
luckily his tax disc arrived this morning!!

Have you def applied for it to start from 1st June, not 1st July?

WendyWeber · 25/06/2008 14:25

Oh sorry, didn't notice dates on posts - glad your DH got off

Katelyn · 25/06/2008 14:32

the offence is 'failure to display' ...

duomonstermum · 25/06/2008 14:50

how can you display something that hasn't arrived???? i assumed that the moment yo paid you were covered and able to drive the car while waiting for the disc. it's not like he deliberately didn't display it iyswim. the police really don't do themselves any favours do they.....

is it really obvious that i'm narked off with them?? they made a huge deal out of DH carrying his disc for the motorbike in his pocket (cos it had been stolen before and the desk sargent told him it would be better to carry it) so he laminated it and they made even more fuss..... errr would like to point out that they said they could do him if the disc was unreadable (which they tend to become if water seeps into the disc holder) and the disc on the policemans bike was in no way readable and out of date.... obviously i was very popular for pointing this out. DH kept on nudging me in the ribs, he thought they were going to arrest me!

Katelyn · 25/06/2008 15:03

you cannot display something that hasnt arrived but you're not supposed to drive the vehicle until you can display...

worley · 25/06/2008 17:43

its strange that in the month we didnt even realise the tax had ran out (and then realised the log book still hadnt arrived), he had been driving it he didnt get stopped once! (we took it off the road when we realised)but couldnt even SORN it until we had proved we brought the car etc

im not a big police fan either, they think they're the bees knees when they turn up at my place of work, i had a really cocky one once who then passed out when he had to stand with his offender(is that what you call it?) and watched the dr sew him up, i then had to xray him as well as he hit his face as he fell down. hes never lived that one down and not so cocky now!!
