Cos I have £20K and when I add up my contents room by room it seems v high. But then I think that all of our posessions must be worth more than that. I know that we all sit on a different part of the scale as far as affluency goes, so we all need different cover, but trying to guage whether I am a million miles out....

We have a 3 bedroom house and £20K cover

So what do you have?

We also have Halifax unlimited cover - I think it was very competitive too in comparison with Direct Line who were our previous insurers. Kitchens and bathrooms are buildings insurance. Having once had to make a buildings and contents claim I recommend having both with the same company - makes the claim a lot easier - we had two different insurers at the time.

Kitchens and bathrooms are split between buildings and contents.

St George, I'm surprised you say redecorating was contents - definitely buildings on our claim. Carpets too! I seem to remember they summed it up by saying anything you would remove if moving house was contents and anything you woul leave buildings. Another good reason IMO to have one insurer for both.

Seems to be the policy amongst most insurers at the moment.

Have had lots of conversations on this subject with neighbours recently, comparing notes on how we feel the insurers are treating us.

Agree having one insurer for buildings/contents is a must.

20k wont cover a 3 bed house. Bear in mind if you "under insure" in the event of a claim a loss adjuster can deduct a % from settlement for under insuring.
