Should the Passport Office have spotted my son's name was misspelt?

Had my son’s first passport come back today and the his name has been spelt wrong. I have contacted the passport office and they are going to look into this. If this is my fault by spelling it wrong then i will have to pay for a new one. if it’s a mistake there end they will send a new one out. but to approve the application they needed my sons birth certificate which i sent off. Should have they printed his name the same as his birth certificate or questioned it if i did put his name in wrong?

Technically it is the examiners job to ensure the docs match the application. If you’re not satisfied with response pursue a complaint and you’ll likely get a free replacement.

My name is spelt wrong on my passport and not once has it ever been questioned. It was their error but a lot of hassle to correct. When I book flights etc I just type it as it is on my passport

DS's first passport said he was female. He had a name that could be male or female (eg Robin) so I think the social worker filling out the form just ticked the wrong box, when the adoption was finalised we slightly altered his first name to be male only and had the passport reissued.

I have also had my passport issued with the wrong photo. I phoned them and it went up the chain a bit and the person I ended up with was horrified and sent me a stamped, addressed envelope to her personally for me to send back the passport and a new photo. They got the new one back to me within a week.

Just to update,
I now have a new passport coming for my son and did not have to pay again as it was in fact a mistake at the passport office. His new passport application is now a priority so hopefully should arrive soon. The lady on the phone was very apologetic about the situation but just glad it’s all sorted.

That’s a great update! It’s scary when you have to challenge a big organisation, especially where cost is involved.
Happy holidays!

I wouldn’t put it past the passport office to make this mistake. When I sent off my twins passports, they only processed one. When I called to enquire they told me I had ‘sent two duplicate copies of the birth certificate and forms’. I said no … they are twins, it’s two different birth certificates …

Oh dear!

OP, glad you got it sorted and thanks for updating.

That is hilarious but also worrying. Unless your two are Paul and Paula, you would hope the names would be a clue!

All I’m saying is if you aren’t good at spelling it’s possible you made a mistake and they aren’t liable for that.

But even at that I would still expect her how to spell her own son’s name.

Yes, you’d think they - you know - actually read the forms … Two very non similar names. And different sexes!

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 12/04/2026 09:28

strange post. if you spelt it wrong, then just pay for a new one. if it's spelt the same on birth certificate and your form they will sort it. of course they aren't going to be as accurate as parents on spelling of millions of names that come through the post.. don't sweat it.

RTFT - there are a surprising number of people on here saying they did it….

Regardless, my point was even if op is bad at spelling I doubt it would extend to her son’s name

And yet the evidence is before us 🤷‍♀️
