How bad is your eye sight?

FeetupTvon · 22/03/2026 17:07

I’m 48 and go for an eye test every two years. Every time I go my eye sight has got worse. (Short sighted) I’m currently -5.25. Is that considered really bad?

It's to do with the shape of your eye I think, so sadly not much you can do about it.
My sight is getting more snd more hazy as the prescription numbers increase. I won't drive at night any more.

When I've had eye hospital investigations they say it looks consistent with injury, but I've no idea how that comes about?

ItsLeviosaNotLeviosar · 22/03/2026 23:28

Not actually sure what my prescription is but at my last check I was 6/7.5 in one eye and 6/-12 in another. At the moment I only wear glasses for driving. I have bad astigmatism too though so won't drove at night. I was diagnosed with bilateral optic neuropathy a couple of years ago at a routine eye test just to top it all off. Is there anyone else with damaged/thin optic nerves? Apparently it's very rare unless caused by gluacoma/optic neuritis

My consultant thinks I have a problem with my optic nerves but no amount of testing she's done, she can't give it a name

About -7.50 in each eye, now with some long sight, always with astigmatism.

I wore contact lenses from 16 until about 45 when my eyes got drier (although I never had problems with monthlies) and I needed reading glasses as well and frequently forgot them so threw in the towel and went for varifocals. None of my friends of around my age, wear contacts any more.

I need my glasses from the moment I wake up.

What irks is that good quality varifocals and lens thinning adds hundreds of pounds to the price. Last time I got new sunglasses on a half price deal and the bill was either £1032 or £1132 - and the bastards told me if I needed a bag to queue up at the cash tills and buy one for 10p. Boots. What do people on tight budgets do.

Sympathies to all on the thread who have significantly worse eyesight or no vision at all Flowers

Go to ASDA even if it’s a trek as their varifocals are amazingly cheap and yes they are thinned.

IloveJonBonJovi · 23/03/2026 07:30

I used to be -9.75 and -9.25 which was bloody terrible. I had lazik about 26/27 years ago I’m now -0.50 and -0.75 which is awesome. I do wear glasses to drive now but I’m 53

Are your optic nerves thin? And is it both sides @TigerRag . Mines has no identifiable cause but they suspect its likely due to either a severe nutrition deficiency (now corrected) or possibly hereditary but no one else in my family have eye issues. But as I said mines was only detected incidentally on a routine exam

I was born with it and they think it's the underlying cause of my other eye issues. I was told it was optic atrophy but someone else had decided it's not

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 23/03/2026 08:27

-8 in both, plus astigmatism in one eye, now also a +2 for reading. Had assessment for levs replacement, spent loads only to meet the surgeon and he advised too risky due to lens shape. I’m saving for lasik now, lens replacement later.

Pepperedpickles · 23/03/2026 08:47

I’ve worn glasses since I was 4, I’m now 45, minus 10 both eyes and now need a plus 2 reading add. I have astigmatism, lattice retinal degeneration, have had PVDs both eyes and have lots of autoimmune issues that affect my eyes. I can’t wear contacts anymore due to Sjögren’s syndrome and so I’m stuck with varifocals which make my eyes look tiny. I hate it. Really wish I had good eyes. I live in fear of retinal detachment etc as my retinas are already very thin (white without pressure and lattice degeneration).

RaraRachael · 23/03/2026 08:52

About -15 in both eyes with a separated retina, glaucoma and astigmatism.
If I didn't have glasses on, I couldn't read any letters on the optician's board.

It's annoying as I'd love to go swimming with my grandchildren but can't.

Why can’t you go swimming? I just wear my glasses. (I’ve got similar issues to you).

boobot1 · 23/03/2026 08:59

Im -4.25 in both eyes and I cant see anything. I thought that was really bad, but apparently, it could be a lot worse. I can read the tiniest of text perfectly but stand a foot away from me and its just a blur. Have maintained this for about 5 years now.

HurtleTurtle30 · 23/03/2026 09:00

I’m -5.5 in one eye and no prescription in the other eye so when I was wearing contact lenses I only needed one. So a complete jumble. I wear glasses to see long distance but if I want to read my phone I take my glasses off 😂. I probably should get varifocals I’m just not sure if I would get on with them and they aren’t cheap.

RaraRachael · 23/03/2026 09:17

@Pepperedpickles I just wouldn't feel happy wearing my glasses going swimming in case they got splashed or knocked off.

That’s a shame. My glasses are £800 but I just make sure I don’t put my head under the water etc. There’s no way I’m going to miss out on fun stuff with my family.

Squirrelchops1 · 23/03/2026 09:36

That was my prescription and I had LASIK 14 years ago. Life changing.

EasterlyDirection · 23/03/2026 09:48

I'm -13, been wearing contacts for 40 years and have varifocals for when I'm not wearing them. Mine has kept getting worse gradually through adulthood and then middle aged long-sight started creeping in too. I had a choice of having full strength contact lenses but needing reading glasses over them, or slightly under-strength contacts which I can read in and having top up glasses for driving at night, this works really well for me (before that I did monovision, one for reading one for distance for about 10 years but it gradually stopped working). So I wear contacts about 99% of the time and glasses only occasionally, I'm abut the only person I know my age who doesn't need reading glasses.

I have prescription goggles for swimming, I used to just wear glasses in the pool when the DCs were young and it was more messing about / supervision. To be honest, I'm so used to it and none of it is any real bother that I don't think of it as being bad. I do like my super-power of being able to see things crystal clear when they are about an inch from my nose, it's great if I get a splinter.

You can get a band that slots over each arm of your glasses and then fits securely to the back of your head. I used one whilst doing the water parks in Florida. Absolute game changer. Meant I could see walking about and I didn’t need to worry about my glasses flying off coming down the slides or getting lost in the water

thornbury · 23/03/2026 12:55

-6 in both. I can walk around at home without glasses but I wouldn't say I can function efficiently!

Dawnb19 · 23/03/2026 19:21

I'm -8 in one eye and -6.5 in the other. I'm 36.
