What are the good points?
What are the bad points?
We are trying to decide which area of the country to move to, and considering York.

I live near York. It is really lovely. Gorgeous city, really friendly, plenty to do. Yes lots of tourists but same is true of Oxford, London etc.

People always say Leeds is good for shopping but IMO York is far far superior.

Although look at flood risk when looking for houses!

My DS is only tiny so I don't know about schools, but there are plenty of baby/toddler friendly places eg the Spurriergate centre.

My brother has lived in York for 15 years now - he used to live by the city walls - parking is terrible. He now lives on the outskirts. Traffic is a nightmare.

Gorgeous city and fab access to North York Moors and the coast.

Thanks for replies..
We are currently in London, and looking to move in about 3 yrs time. Hoping for medium sized city that we can cycle around / use public transport, and also have some access to hills.

my sister's just moved there, she's loving it. and, lol, it got a brilliant write-up in the guardian property section. [utter ponce]

York is a great city to live in with lots going on and it is very cycle friendly with children. The housing will seem cheap to you coming from London and the schools are all ok - some better than others of course.

£400 000 odd could get you this

or

£160 000 would look something like this

Thanks for the newcastle suggestion - will add it to the list of places to check out! Any others?
Thanks also for the links, yes, rather fancy that 400k one, but sadly out of our budget. We will be somewhere in between. We don't have a typical london priced house because we are shared ownership, and thus only own a percentage of our house.

York is lovely, but very busy in the summer and parking is a nightmare. Trains from London are fab - less than 2 hours.

Might be worth considering North Leeds if you want easy access to the countryside.
