Whats an alternative to a raffle (no licence!)

Ive got a stall at our village festival on saturday and wanted to do a raffle, so stupid, naive me didnt think i needed a licence (ffs) until i was informed late last night.

Ive rung our council who have confirmed i do need a licence and its £40!!! No chance.

So ive got raffle tickets and raffle prizes, so what can i do? is there a loophole?

Errr.....we have raffles all the time and we never had a licence [aggghhh].

Is it the same for a tombola? If not, you could use your stuff for one of those.

You don't need a license unless you're selling tickets beforehand - e.g.some schools send printed tickets home with each child to try to sell to family and friends. These tickets have to have a licensed person's name and contact details on.

If you're literally just running a stall and selling tickets on the stall, you don't need any permission.

thanks guys, ecoworrier - the council says i do and it would be really embarrassing if i had a raffle and someone shut my stall down . How sure are you that i dont need any permission?

well i will print this off and take it with me, but i have again been onto my local council, rotherham borough council, and they say i MUST have a license which will cost me £40 and if i do a tombola, bingo, hook a duck or any other form of raffle, i need a license costing £1500!!!

The organisers of the event have kindly said that i may operate under their license, so long as i abide by their perimeters (eg not selling to under 16's for example), so i will be fine.

But beware, i knew nothing about these guidelines, but if you are doing this and get caught, you could be fined £2000!

I know! Thats what i said! How many people up and down the country are going to have a tombola/raffle in the next few months at summer fayres etc?

Its insane - £1500? £40 is bad enough, id have one a week for that!

I'm sure that can't be right. A licence for hook a duck! I don't think so!

According to everything I've ever read or been told officially, an 'exempt lottery' is one one takes place during events such as a fete, sporting event, dance or other entertainment.

Think its just Rotherham Council who are muppets then!!
