Where to live? Wallsend or Morpeth?

We have a two-year-old and both work from home. I like to get out and about most days with our little one — parks, swimming, classes, cafés etc. I’m from Scotland and my partner is from Newcastle (he grew up in Howdon). His family are now in Ashington. We currently live in Scotland but are planning to relocate to Newcastle as we’re there more and want to be closer to family.
We’ve found two “dream” new builds in completely different locations and genuinely can’t decide.

Option 1 – Wallsend
Hidden-away development but very close to everything. Metro nearby, swimming pools, a boys’ football club right next door, and schools all within 1–2 minutes. It feels very convenient and practical, especially with a toddler.

Option 2 – Morpeth
Also a tucked-away new build. I don’t know Morpeth well at all. The train station is about 5 minutes away and it’s only around 12 minutes into Newcastle. The town centre is meant to be lovely — old-market feel, independent shops, bars and restaurants. It’s also about 15 minutes to the Northumberland coast and close to the A1, so good for Edinburgh/London links too.

Morpeth sounds idyllic, but I’m worried I’m romanticising it without really knowing the day-to-day reality — especially with a two-year-old and both of us working from home. Would it feel isolating? Are there plenty of toddler groups, activities, soft play, etc.? Or would Wallsend just be easier and more practical long-term?
For those who know both areas — especially with young children — what would you choose and why?

Morpeth is a highly prestigious area..
Wallsend is a million miles away....
Ime.

I think you need to get out and visit places and then house hunt.

Wallsend is... working class. (I'm being polite.) Morpeth is middle class but yes a bit boring. Ashington isn't great.

You'd get a lot more for your money in Wallsend, Ashington or Cramlington than in Morpeth.

Your partner should know the lie of the land in the Newcastle/Northumberland areas.

Surely the two house prices can’t be anywhere near the same?
Morpeth is far superior to Wallsend and a million times nicer!

I know both well and wouldn’t go to Wallsend at all. Morpeth is lovely. What about Whitley Bay, Monkseaton etc, kind of in between the two. Very convenient, pretty decent, new train line and metro. Decent cafes and restaurants, the beach!

Wow OP. They are both hugely different areas. I personally dislike Wallsend and would choose Morpeth. The town centre is lovely, it is a more picturesque and well to do area. Better schools. I have friends who live in Wallsend who are happy there but the town centre is really run down, primary and secondaries aren’t that great, there is a lot going on there though.

I have two young kids and if you asked me where I would want to spend a day with them I’d pick Morpeth- lovely park, swimming pool, soft play. Then further afield is Whitehouse Farm, Eshott airfield, the zoo.

Tynemouth! The Kings School (secondary) used to be fee paying. Still gets great results.

I agree! 💕

Morpeth any day of the week. A new build in Wallsend will probably be absolutely fine but Morpeth is wall to wall yummy mummies and coffee shops and soft play and toddler groups. A little bit further out the way but the train station connects you to both Newcastle and Edinburgh easily enough, Northumberland on your doorstep and a nice genteel evening out (never the way anyone would describe Wallsend high st).

I know Morpeth a bit and Wallsend area very well. Where exactly is it in Wallsend? Do you mean more like Benton? I’m trying to think where there are new builds… If you mean East Benton rise estate that’s rough and a big no from me. If you mean further along into Benton, near blue flames and the Benton quarry park, that’s a nicer estate and area. I do think north Tyneside in general is a much better place to live than Morpeth, in term of how connected it is. You have the metro, lots going on etc, I would always choose north Tyneside over Morpeth for those reason, but it’s just maybe not the best area of north Tyneside. As other have said maybe the coast? But if you say more about the exact area of Wallsend I can advise. I know Wallsend and Benton areas extremely well. And the coast ☺️
