I am as green as a green thing.

Would they want something from an unknown writer, even if it was good enough? And how should/would I present it? Typed or sent by email?

Any advice appreciated.

Well how it works is that the editor usually decides what articles he/she would like in their publication and then they commission the article.
They are always interested in ideas though so you could submit a pitch in the form of the first page of your proposed article, that way they can get the jist of the piece and see if you can write.
Most editors are not interested in and won't read uncommissioned pieces.

Thanks, Carmenere.

I'm going to give it a go. Nothing ventured etc.

I imagine times are lean at the moment, though.

Well I think it depends what subject you want to write about tbh. Money-saving tips and savings advice I'd imagine would go down well

The idea matters more than your writing experience, but you still have to present it properly so that it gets looked at.

This blog post is a beginner's guide to pitching articles, should point you in the right direction.
