We are a large family (3 boys,8,6,4 and 1 girl of 12 months) and are thinking of moving. We currently live in south west London and want somewhere slightly quieter, calmer, SAFER, where there are good schools, but not hugely expensive.

No ideas whatsoever, please help!

twelvelegs, for the most part I agree with you re: state schools, but some private schools are going 'academy status' (Bristol Cathedral, Colston Girls).

But in terms of cities, Bristol is one of the better ones, I think!

Lincolnshire, still has the 11 plus, houses are v cheap in comparison to other parts of the country.

Train from Grantham to Kings cross is 1hr 15 mins.

Loads of pretty villages outside of the towns.

Norway is dark and cold for months on end. Not right now, obviously, but still ...

I agree, I love Bristol. It's got everything, I even love the accent, JLC has done 'good' things for the way Bristolians talk. It is also the smiliest city in Britain.

Woodbridge, Suffolk
Good schools, sailing, great beaches, close enough to London, great bookshop, train station, house prices reasonable

We moved from SW London last year to Winchester. I know primary schools are good but not sure about secondary (DCs are only 2.4 and 5 months). Winchester is lovely though, and if your DH can work from home you don't have to be so close to the station so is not as expensive a bit further out.

We live in a village called Kelvedon in North Essex - is fab - schools are great (lots of Grammers) , houses aren't too expensive and people are mega friendly.

We moved from Greenwich about a year ago and I wouldn't go back to the big smoke if you paid me.

Haverhill

tiz cheap and once you've bought a stab vest, perfectly safe

Lilymaid · 16/06/2008 16:32

Saffron Walden area - cheaper than SW London though not that cheap, excellent schools all the way through, nice villages and towns, easy access to London ... shall I go on.

East Yorkshire.

Houses tres cheapo, schools fab, villages lovely and picturesque.

Good commuter links (depending on where you go, obviously)

Close to York, Hull and the East coast.
