I need to get everything on the cheap but obviously need to ensure I don't get complete tosh, can anyone give me good advice about buying cheap baby stuff (everything) on ebay or other cheap places?

If you have baby girl stuff listen on ebay or on here that you can highly recommend, can you link/point me in the right direction.

Just to be clear, so far all I've bought a baby dress from Monsoon on my way home from my 20 week scan, so I need EVERYTHING!

go charity shop shopping - much more fun than ebay. and you can get vests and stuff for like 20p

dizzydixies · 14/06/2008 21:09

let me warn you, you need loads less than you think. Hardly any clothes. you will have your favourite two outfits that you will wash and wash and the other stuff will not get worn. Buy as much as you can after the baby is born cos you will klnow what you need.

I have got three slings, lo hates all of them, a steam steriliser used once,
don't get a tummy tub!! lo hated it, impossible to use,

A good pram is a must

dizzydixies · 14/06/2008 21:11

NCT

just fill in your postcode and it should bring up any sales near to you

lilyloo · 14/06/2008 21:13

Would only buy a few baby grows and vests as you tend to get lo's of clothes once the baby is born.
For equipment check out freecycle there is always loads of stuff going on there.

Rowlers · 14/06/2008 21:13

First port of call - any friends / family / colleagues with slightly older children? They may well have lots of baby stuff they want to get rid of for nothing.
Second - agree with Custy re: charity shops but depends on your local shops. Thye are good for clothes and some toys. Mine are a bit pricey so..
Third - Buy in the sales. Especially clothes. You can get real bargains.
Fourth - check ads in local supermarket. My local Morrisons always has ads for baby stuff very cheap. And you can always haggle.

AbstractMouse · 14/06/2008 21:15

I can give you lots of 0-6 months neutral/boy stuff if you are really desperats lol

dizzydixies · 14/06/2008 21:16

local paper/for sale green pages sometimes have some great nearly new buys too

is this your first? can I recommend actually telling people what you would like, everyone is sooooo generous when a new baby is concerned and am sure they would rather buy you something useful than something frivilous

Flightybitchreturns · 14/06/2008 21:17

Make a list of everything you don't mind having second hand and everything you want to be new.
Boot fairs are great for all the S/H stuff. Not a cot though, or mattress - cots can be very time consuming and hard work to get clean, and your child will be eating it so it has to be really Though if you co sleep you may not need one!
Mattress has to be new because of safety regs.
Prams and buggies can be second hand, no problem.
Congrats!!

2point4kids · 14/06/2008 21:45

Definitely freecycle!

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 14/06/2008 21:45

Yeah less is more at first. You'll need:

-a handful of newborn vests and babygrows
-about a dozen each of 0-3 month vests and babygrows (don't bother with proper clothes just yet, newborns are just too floppy)
-a couple of soft cardigans, couple of little hats
-some blankets and soft sheets for swaddling/moses basket
-You don't NEED a moses basket, they can sleep in with you or straight in the cot but they're nice to have downstairs for somewhere clean and safe to put the baby down
-muslin squares

  • nipple cream, breast pads if you're planning on breastfeeding
-bottles and steriliser if you're planning on bottlefeeding -dummies if you have a sucky baby -changing mat (or folded towel) cotton wool, vaseline, top n tail bowl, baby bath -changing bag -thermometer, infacol, nail clippers, maternity pads, arnica -v pillow (I found mine invaluable!) -Pushchair and carseat, cosytoes if it's going to be cold -Cot, simple bouncy chair and possibly a cot mobile although not essential they are nice to have. -NAPPIES. Stock up now, they go through about ten a day initially. You want a couple of large packs of newborn size, and loads of the next size up. -WIPES. These won't go off and one size fits all. Even if you plan on using cotton wool and water for a while, you can still stock up when you see a good offer. Tip: asda's own brand ones are rubbish.

Think that's about it. Tell friends and family what you need, and ask them only to buy clothes for 3-6 months and upwards (most people will ignore you and buy some newborn and 0-3 clothes because they "just couldn't resist" so you should ensure a good mix that way!) You probably won't have to buy ANY clothes yourself for the first six months so go easy.

And apart from friends and family, try freecycle, charity shops, car boot sales, newspaper ads and yes, ebay!

I've bought a few things (pushchair etc) from this ebay shop but you're probably best off looking for last minute bargains.

My tips: get your big stuff off freecycle, get your important stuff new (cot mattress, moses basket mattress, you may want new newborn clothes out of preference) get your bits slowly from discount shops.

Avoid certain baby websites which make you believe you need things like babywipe warmers, nappystackers etc - seems like everyone's out to fleece new parents! Sorry for the ramble, hth.

squilly · 15/06/2008 15:03

Ebay - always check carefully what you're buying. It sounds silly, but you want to be sure you're spending your money wisely so if a seller says 'like new' or 'excellent condition', I'd go for it. Then if it's rubbish you have some come back.

Car Boots - by far the cheapest and most fun way to buy baby/kiddy clothes, toys, and other essentials. I loved them and my dd (now 7) still gets car boot goodies 9 times out of 10.

Toiletries/Necessities - If you have a Home Bargains nearby, they're great for toiletries...as are Bodycare.

General - check out supermarket.com website for BOGOFF offers, discounts, etc, particulalry if you're buying disposable nappies/wet wipes, etc.

Good advice given above, as in you don't need half the stuff you think you will. I used my hugely expensive pram half a dozen times, but dd lived in the car seat (not recommended now, I know, but it shows a big pram is not always wise).

Buggy was the best thing I ever bought and that was a cheap and cheery jobby from Toys R Us in the sale.

Good luck with it all. You'll find a way through! And Mumsnet often has mums offering stuff for free too (check out the for free thread!).

LuXander · 15/06/2008 15:11

Preloved has a good baby/ children section, prams/ pushchairs, cots, babyclothes.
Also, on a money saving note, join the boots parenting club, double points on nappies etc wich means that every so often you can spend your points and effectively get things free

DazedEmma · 16/06/2008 12:58

sorry i forgot about this, i've been looking on ebay for bottles and stuff, is this ok to do? Or would you advise buying stuff like this new?

thanks for the help so far ladies
