Hello everyone. I need some advice. My daughter is 10 years old and started her period when she was 9.shes having very heavy periods that are painful. The doctor has prescribed her the mini pill to delay her puberty but I'm unsure if I should let her take it. My experience with the mini pill was not great but I didn't get my period till I was 15. Any advice would be appreciated.

What pill is it?
The mini pill doesnt delay puberty. It may or may not cause erratic breakthrough bleeding though

Huh? She’s already pubertal if she’s having periods so the pill won’t delay puberty. It can control bleeding though and about 70% of girls and women using the progesterone only pill (mini pill) won’t bleed at all, and if they do it is likely to be lighter and less frequent.

It’s not risk free but it’s low risk, and if she she’s old enough to bleed she’s old enough to use hormones to control her bleeding (generally speaking).

I wouldn’t - I had constant spotting and bleeding for a few days, break then more bleeding. There was no ‘cycle’. I also had the largest clots going with the mini pill. Also do you really want to give her hormones at this age?

Its definitely uncomfortable and unpleasant having heavy periods but could she try with maternity pads?

You won’t know unless she tries it. I don’t think you can let your experience influence the situation as we react differently.

Sorry I explained it all a bit wrong. The doctor said it will delay her periods until she's at secondary school but when I went to the pharmacy to collect the prescription the pharmacist said it will affect puberty and what's naturally happening to her body. That's why I was a bit reluctant. The pill is on order as they hadn't got it in. I did think the same thing as you though if she's already started puberty then the pill can't stop it just ease her bleeding. What the pharmacist said just threw me a bit.

The pharmacist is wrong. But the progesterone only pill could suppress ovulation. It won’t affect puberty, growth or development though.

Tranexamic acid tablets would help control the bleeding without messing around with hormones

Which pill is it?
The mini pill can't be relied on to stop periods so what has she been prescribed?

The pharmacist is wrong.

I'm on the mini pill and have no periods but my DD is on it and has regular ones so it's no guarantee it will stop them.
