Body Cameras - for the general public as a deterrent

Of late, I have been researching compliant, encrypted Body Cameras in detail. The reason being, I feel less safe in my Community as a Pedestrian. The driving is reckless in the town and on residential streets, there's no designated crossings, other than the main thoroughfares. There's been so many near-misses and I'm not just fed-up by nearly having the skin taken off my heels by cars that do not respect I have left the pavement well in advance of their car ripping around the corner towards me when I'm already half-way across the road! I am, in fact, becoming ever so slightly on-edge about it. I'm interested in any members feeling similarly? Talking to friends and relatives, many are of the same opinion.

Are you in the UK?

I've had some shocking encounters with cyclists and scooters in London, but not enough to make me even think about this.

This isn’t a good plan

Let’s say you get hit by a car and killed / seriously injured and that it’s all captured on wearable tech. The driver might be found to be at fault, but regardless of that, you will still be dead/seriously injured.

There are some appalling drivers about, but most drivers are competent. If incidents are happening repeatedly, you need to find a safer way to cross. You mention a corner. This seems a dangerous place to cross.

Yes, the UK. I've just had a quick scan to see if anybody else has posted about purchasing body cameras and noted a couple - there was emphasis on body cams for reducing unwanted interest from men in public. I see that point also & for general safety. What a thing it is to be considering body cam use as the daily norm! Have I gone 'off-my-rocker'?!! 🤣

It's a bit of a weird set-up where I live. My home is bang in the middle of a short street - said Street has double yellow lines on my side of the street. There are 3 junctions. In order to cross the road, I am close to each junction. There's no other option. A high percentage of local drivers drive way too fast & cut corners. There's little room for error and it's frightening.

I’ve had 3 drivers recently not stop at a zebra crossing whilst I was half way across. One of those drivers overtook the driver who had stopped

so I can understand your concern op

If there is a camera and op is dead, the driver might get banned from driving - do it might save someone else from the same fate for a while.

cyclist often wear cameras and motorists have dashcam, both report what they perceive to be dangerous manoeuvres to the police, in the thousands. Some drivers get banned, fined or pounts

I wouldn't dream of it. It's unnecessary, unfair to others and possibly illegal.

That happens quite a lot now in the UK. I lived abroad in the Middle East 2003-2006 and most of the time it was too hot to walk and not the 'done thing', however, in the cooler months, we did have the occasional potter and 9 times out of 10, drivers did not stop for us on pedestrian zebras. I remember thinking how civilised the UK was in comparison but now, that's changing rapidly.

It’s not illegal to wear or use a dashcam or bodycam

In that case, I would try to get some sort of traffic calming stuff put in by the council. Humps, signs, etc

No doubt everyone will have body cams of some sort in the near future.. already a thing with the sunglasses with cameras
