Vestibular Migraine

Hi all!

i recently seen a GP about episodes of dizziness and imbalance that I've been experiencing over the past week that led to a migraine where I loss my peripheral vision temporarily (not usually the case with the migraines I sometimes experience where I get kaleidoscope vision). I'm 5 months postpartum to note. The GP said she couldn't really explain it and that she thinks the dizziness is all related to the migraine I had and prescribed me some sumatriptan for whenever I get an attack, if I get an attack.

however, days later I'm still getting dizziness and imbalance but no headaches etc. I've been doing a bit of researching (of course dr google cannot diagnose me) but I believe what I'm experiencing may be vestibular migraine. as I believe from what I've read is that you can have this but not get the headache part but you experience on and off dizziness, imbalance, nausea, fatigue and that's all what I'm experiencing.

the thing is how do I now re contact my gp and express that this is what I think it is without it seeming like I'm undermining and doing their job! ultimately if this is the case I don't want to suffer it out for weeks and then go back and complain of it again for them to refer me.

Hi OP I had this exact situation and have now had VM for many years. It's very difficult because doctors can get very touchy. And many of them won't have heard of VM. I went and just listed out all the symptoms and said I thought it was a type of migraine. And luckily the GP diagnosed me and I got referred to neurology. I can't really help more about that.
Couple of things though.
The Heads Up podcast from the National Migraine centre has a good episode on VM.
Look up The Vertigo Doctor on YouTube, she knows her stuff.
And the Migraine Trust has some helpful info too.

Good luck.

Hi op. I was diagnosed with VM 15 years ago. I had many tests through ENT and Neurology. They did ? MS. Very good advice from @ChocolateLemsip . I did have' normal' migraines from early 20's as well. Having gone through probably all the meds I now have Emgality injections which help abit. Deffo go with @ChocolateLemsip advice. It is hard but advocate for yourself. Good luck.

The PP already gave good advice. My GP referred me to ENT and after three years I saw a neurologist.

Currently I am taking migraine supplements and I think after 5 weeks they are helping a bit.

I get awful vertigo attacks and never have headaches with them.

There is a facebook group called Vestibular Migraine Community which is quite helpful.

I can also recomment the book Victory over Vestibular Migraine by Shin C. Beh (2024). He lists all the various treatments and life changes that might help.

Good luck, this is a truthfully awful illness.

Apologies for a reply a couple days later! I'm very appreciative of the informative replies! I am still struggling with said symptoms and have done a lot of research into vestibular migraines. I'm going to leave it til after the christmas period and go back and advocate for myself x

Also look up vestibular neuritis, I think I had this (a one off) a couple of years ago. It's the worst I've ever felt.
