sun block ruining my daughters clothes!!!

mummyloveslucy · 08/06/2008 19:22

My daughter uses nivea factor 50 childrens sun block. She is very fair so she needs it. The problem is it leaves yellow stains on her white clothes when it rubs off.
I've tried washing them, soaking them, vanish etc but nothing seems to work. It is evil stuff!! Does anyone know how to avoid this staining and how to get her whites back to normal? Thanks.

howlong are you leaving it between putting it on and getting her dressed?

OverMyDeadBody · 08/06/2008 19:26

dress her in yellow?

mummyloveslucy · 08/06/2008 19:29

It's tricky as I have to re-apply it during the day, whalst she's waring her clothes. And as you know, 3 year olds don't tend to sit perfectly still while you apply it.

I used to apply sun block before breakfast whilst dd's were still in there pants - then let it all soak in and dry before they were dressed.

If it is factor 50 that is 50 x 10 mins = 500mins / 8 hours that will be most of the day - unless they are outside all day?

I was always under the imprssion that you should not reapply sun cream but that you should go out of the sun as reapplying didn't work?

MLL I had the same problem and have stopped using it - am using the L'oreal kids range instead which isn't coloured and doesn't stain - the other stuff ruined loads of dd's clothes. dd very fair skinned too.

Also the nivea stuff contains octyl-methooxycinnamate amongst others which can penetrate the skin and has been shown to have potentially oestrogenic properties. The L'oreal stuff contains mexoryl - a UVA patented by L'Oreal which doesn't penetrate the skin. Article here which contains other suggestions. HTH How not to burn in the sun

mummyloveslucy · 08/06/2008 19:40

Oh, thanks for letting me know that.
I tend to re-apply it quite a lot as I'm worried she will burn. She's not out in the sun all day so it probubly would last her.

pinkteddy- Thanks for that. That is interesting as you would think nivea would be one of the best. What a nightmare i've just stocked up on it now for summer, it was bogof.

Well we all used it for two years before I read about it! Most of the products on the market do contain it as it is a very effective sun block.

mamablue · 08/06/2008 19:53

We use l'oreal factor 50 childrens lotion too. Not stained anything so far.

thehairybabysmum · 08/06/2008 19:56

Have had this too...best bet is to dry he stained cloths on the line in the sun...the sun helps to bleach out the stain.

I am using Boots Soltan factor 50 at the mo on my two and doesnt seem to be as bad as others ive had.
