Neighbour complained about dryer

I have just had a text from my next door neighbour saying my tumble dryer is too loud and its "having a significant adverse impact on their quality of life".
For context, we live in detached houses, its on carpet in the utility room, I'd say there is at least 6ft gap between the houses, with cavity wall and a fence. I don't run it early in the morning or late at night. I'd say it runs between 10 and 3 if that. Its an eco one, so it does go on for about 3 hours, but uses little electricity. I have 2 kids, who play lots of sports and I have clothes I need to get dry.
What do I do?

Is that an extension on their side. One that they tacked on themselves and their foundations haven't been laid properly If it is, it's definitely their problem as it (in my defence I know nothing about building. )

Emptyandsad · 30/10/2025 17:31

Superglue 2 layers of egg boxes to all the external surfaces of the dryer and put it on an old car tyre to manage the vibrations. Then superglue 2 further layers of egg boxes to the internal walls of the utility room

Or very gently suggest that he could rent his ears out to GCHQ to listen out for Putin giving secret orders to his generals. He would save the country a fortune

Climbingrosexx · 30/10/2025 17:32

I would probably ask them nicely to knock on your door when they can hear it and you will come round to their side of the fence so you can listen to how loud it is as you really do not want your neighbours upset.

If there is clearly no noise nuisance from your property (I don't see how there can be looking at the picture) and they carry on then maybe its time not to be so nice and tell them you consider this harassment and will need to take things further if it doesn't stop

I mean how loud can it be? Its a tumble dryer not a typhoon aircraft

recklessgran · 30/10/2025 17:33

Utterly batshit. Reckon he might have tinnitus OP?

I’d tell him that if it upsetting him that much he can report it to the council and they can do volume tests, but you’ll continue with normal daily living until and unless they advise you otherwise.

It sounds as though he has MH issues, so I’d possibly explore taking your fence to the highest height allowed and just ignore him. And his underwear.

I'd do this. I wouldn't go in his house to listen to the noise. The sound he can hear is the last neighbour he murdered haunting him.

If he carried on I'd just tell him to fuck off. And that I'm a solicitor and can do him an official letter telling him to fuck off if he likes.

Or "I refer you to the reply given in Arkell and Pressdram in 1971."

Gibstub · 30/10/2025 17:36

Ignore her.

Emptyandsad · 30/10/2025 17:36

Anyway, tumble driers don't vibrate! Are you sure he doesn't mean your washing machine? That would still be crazy, but would make slightly more sense. A washing machine on spin can be quite noisy, even if it only lasts 5 minutes. Especially if the load is a little unbalanced

Only under the dryer, so if any clothes drop on the floor its clean

This is genius!

Isobel201 · 30/10/2025 17:43

I live in an attached town house with a tumble dryer and a washing machine both on hard floors. Never had any complaints from the neighbours. I'm flabbergasted as to how they can hear it to the extent it bothers them that much.

You can’t comprehend that some people experience things in a different way to you?

They must spend all day with ears glued to the wall!

Parkerpenny · 30/10/2025 17:48

Go and talk to to them.

Simple

Usually if the neighbours are doing something like hoovering, you just turn the tv or radio up etc.
Yes I'm aware people experience things differently to me.

But you said you are “flabbergasted” that it is affecting them

Hankunamatata · 30/10/2025 17:51

Id send dh round to discuss it with him. Person to person

Bananaandmangosmoothie · 30/10/2025 17:54

I can’t hear my neighbours’ dryer and we share a wall.

Steady on, that’s way too reasonable. 😀

They are the ones with the problem. They should come and talk to OP.

Cherrysoup · 30/10/2025 17:55

Genuinely can’t hear mine (condenser also) through the utility then kitchen door. Bizarre how they’re only complaining now after 2 years of you (and the dryer?) be8ng there and yeah, why did he text you and not your Dh? Go round, ask to listen.

And?

AgentPidge · 30/10/2025 17:58

I would go round. Or send DH round. It's distressing them - if there's something simple you can do, then that'll solve it. I don't agree that "pandering" to them will lead to ever more ridiculous demands, because they've tolerated this for two years and seemingly have finally got to the end of their tether. Wouldn't you care if it was your parents who were distressed? You may not be able to do anything, but if you can, it'll make for smoother neighbourly relations.

UPDATE!!!
He's text again saying
"The level of noise and vibration we have experienced in recent months is not acceptable to us. We have lived here for 36 years and have never been troubled by tumble dryer noise before. The problem may be your machine"
I have just stood by the utility room and you I could hear a slight rumble. Shut the teeny window and couldn't hear anything.
The picture is of the gap between the houses and the dryer is on the attached internal wall.

If I was in a detached house I wouldn't give a F**K what my neighbours thought. Call the police if you like. It's my house.

Just say you need dry clothes and it’s already in a carpeted room. Is that safe?

You don’t care about upsetting your neighbours?
