Neighbour complained about dryer

I have just had a text from my next door neighbour saying my tumble dryer is too loud and its "having a significant adverse impact on their quality of life".
For context, we live in detached houses, its on carpet in the utility room, I'd say there is at least 6ft gap between the houses, with cavity wall and a fence. I don't run it early in the morning or late at night. I'd say it runs between 10 and 3 if that. Its an eco one, so it does go on for about 3 hours, but uses little electricity. I have 2 kids, who play lots of sports and I have clothes I need to get dry.
What do I do?

Absolutely nothing.

BoredZelda · 30/10/2025 14:03

You have carpet in the utility room?

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 30/10/2025 14:04

Do they work nights and sleep outdoors the other side of the fence? If not I'll probably tell them to jog on I need to run the dryer and ask what time they'd like that to happen.

CeffylCoch · 30/10/2025 14:04

You're not doing anything wrong, ignore them

TokyoSushi · 30/10/2025 14:04

The fact that you can hear a tumble dryer in next doors detached house is really odd! I'd have to say "can I come and listen to see what you mean?"

You have carpet in the utility room?

Only under the dryer, so if any clothes drop on the floor its clean

I would ask if I could come and have a listen to work out (a) if they are being reasonable and (b) if it's 'loud' or if it's the vibration.

You have carpet in the utility room?

I doubt it. My guess would be just the dryer is on carpet but I'm excited to find out. It could be the washing machine too! The tension is building....

MigGirl · 30/10/2025 14:06

If your in a detached house and they can hear your dryer I think they have bigger problems. Really mine is not quite and annoys me when on, but as we are in a similar detached I very much doubt my neighbours can hear it.

Can you hear it outside at all?

SJM1988 · 30/10/2025 14:06

In a detached house - you do nothing!

A flat maybe I'd suggest some noise mitigating things but that isn't the case.

shellyleppard · 30/10/2025 14:08

Ignore the neighbours or suggest they get ear defenders??? Honestly I'd be very very surprised if they can hear the noise of the dryer. They sound a bit batshit to me tbh

tinyspiny · 30/10/2025 14:08

I’d ignore and crack on , surely a dryer is normal household noise . Some people are overly noise sensitive and that is their problem not yours .

Comefromaway · 30/10/2025 14:08

Another saying you do absolutely nothing.

It is not your fault if they are overly sensitive to normal neighbourhood noise.

NerrSnerr · 30/10/2025 14:09

I’d go and listen to see what the problem is.

FuzzyWolf · 30/10/2025 14:11

My tumbler dryer is on at the moment and I can’t hear it so if they can from another house, they must also be able to hear you typing to start this thread!

WhatNoRaisins · 30/10/2025 14:11

I don't see what you should do. It's normal household noise, they might genuinely be able to hear it but they need to find a way to cope with it.

aWeeCornishPastie · 30/10/2025 14:13

You do nada, zilch they are most likely talking absolute crap

PhuckTrump · 30/10/2025 14:19

I wouldn’t even entertain going over to listen—this will open the floodgates once you’ve engaged.

If your dryer really is affecting their quality of life, they are well within their rights to contact the council, who can do a decibel reading and waste taxpayer money.

firstofallimadelight · 30/10/2025 14:24

I’d say “that’s weird we haven’t used our dryer recently “ and leave them to it.

is the window open when you are drying?

alisonelli · 30/10/2025 14:33

UPDATE!!!
He's text again saying
"The level of noise and vibration we have experienced in recent months is not acceptable to us. We have lived here for 36 years and have never been troubled by tumble dryer noise before. The problem may be your machine"
I have just stood by the utility room and you I could hear a slight rumble. Shut the teeny window and couldn't hear anything.
The picture is of the gap between the houses and the dryer is on the attached internal wall.

Farkinhell · 30/10/2025 14:02

Absolutely nothing.

Exactly this!!!!!

how ridiculous everyone has a dryer or a dishwasher and a washing machine - but how they can hear this in a detached house unless it’s a really old and rattling machine seems bizarre. Have you been outside to see if you can hear it when it’s switched on? Seems strange to me!

Fiftyandme · 30/10/2025 14:38

What do you do? Nothing. Ignore their unreasonable batshittery

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 30/10/2025 14:39

They're being ridiculous. At most it must be a very gentle hum, if you have a window open.

AffableApple · 30/10/2025 14:42

I was going to say YABU, but detached and 6ft away? Carpet underneath? How on earth is that disturbing them? Second the advice to say you're not using it atm. Ask them to check their own appliances and electrics as it must be something in their house.

Pollqueen · 30/10/2025 14:43

Batshit. If you are only running the dryer during the day and early evening, just ignore him
