Tips/Hints needed for what to get my big sis for her Birthday. We're v. close and it's just us, no other siblings. Am hoping that her dh will get her something special and sparkly. So I'm stumped, I'd like to give her and dh time away and we'd have her dss but can't afford loads, tho' our parents may go halves with me. Any other ideas????

maybe someone could recommend something from the kleeneze brochure!!!, sorry not helpful i know.

I am sure time away with her dh would be perfect, maybe you could arrange something with your parents, a few days someone not too far away, you should be able to get something nice and affordable off the internet or teletext (or am i the only one to still use it)

Agree, what better gift than time? None of us have enough of it. You could trawl the internet for one of those v. cheap flights from Ryanair or someone and buy her 2 of those so she and DH could have a weekend away. Even if it was to Newquay in Cornwall, you could search for a pretty but cheap B&B/Pub/small hotel and make her a guidebook of things you think she'd like to do in the area - it would involve a bit of searching the internet and cutting and pasting but - you could include details of cliff walks or restaurant reviews etc. You could also give her a voucher explaining that you'll babysit for the weekend. Or do you want to give her something lasting? If so, liked someone elses idea on another thread about being given a camera and a book to write down 27 things she wanted to do in the next year. The camera was to photograph the things. Or could you make a picture frame up of lots of family photos and memories?

Is she in Scotland and fond of cooking? My 2 best pals got me a great gift - a day at Nick Nairn's cookschool which is based near Stirling. There is a website which a websearch using the words nairns cookschool should reveal.

Cheap flights sound cool. You'd have to be sure they could make the dates though. Is there somewhere that means a lot to them nostalgically?

breeze - lol. That's naughty

I took dh for w/e in Barcelona for his 40th last Sept.
It's a super place, has lots of interesting things to do and see if they're the touristy type, and super restaurants if they're foodie (or just like watching the world go by). Lots of cheap flights too like easyjet, and bmibaby.
I rang my dh's boss and booked the time off direct with him. He told dh he would be needed for staff training on those dates so he didn't book anything else.
It is quite complicated to arrange everything (I even packed secretly, dh knew nothing till I picked him up at the office and drove to the airport) and you need to ensure passports and stuff of course, unless you choose a nice hotel in this country instead.
Well worth the effort tho'

hope it works out

LOL

Batey, had a thought about this today. It would be cheaper to do a special day for her where she lives. So you could deliver breakfast to her in bed and then take the children, having arranged for her to have a facial/sauna before lunch somewhere nice (somewhere she wouldn't usually go) and give her tickets to the theatre/cinema for the evening. You could put a wonderful meal in her fridge when you bring the breakfast so she and her DH can eat before they go out. Label it pre-theatre supper? Don't know how feasible this is!

I posted this a while ago on a different thread, so apols. for repition. For dhs 40th, I bought 40 presents, wrapped them and numbered them. He had to open them in order. They were not all expensive presents, some home-made and he loved it. ds did too, he was 2 and loved all that wrapping paper! egs of some of the pressies: books, ties, sweets, t-shirts, sunhat, socks, framed picture of ds for work desk, toiletries, video. I really enjoyed coming up with the list, 40 is certainly a challenge!

what happens when he reaches 80.

Rhiannon · 10/01/2003 18:46

My DH is 40 this year too. I've got no idea what to get him.

batey · 10/01/2003 20:07

WWW and Slyvev, loved your ideas and will work on a master plan now, maybe incorporating some dodgy photo mantage somewhere.I've only got until early March so I'd better get going if I'm going to get 40 presents........!

My best present when I was 40 was a photo montage by my oldest friend. She (the minx!!)had pics from when I was a baby to the present day - I love it. So much thought went into it, rather than money - and when you hit 40, do you really want to keep getting expensive things? What have you got to prove? It was definately the thought and effort from a special person that made it so great!

kkgirl · 30/01/2003 22:55

My friend is having a photo of her when she was little put onto a cake from Asda. Sounds strange to me

jac34 · 30/01/2003 23:04

Thanks kkgirl, for reminding me of the cake, my friend is 40 next month and I've got some well dodgy photos of her hen night, that would look great on a cake.

Mommymommy · 31/01/2003 18:35

My hubby was 40 last year so i took some photos of our girls and had three framed and arranged and put on the chimney breast whilst he was at work and then got a large photo frame and arranged some of the others on these (one to a page) and then type a special note. Maybe you could do that for your sister of both her children and yours. I refuse to give anyone else copies of the 3 framed photos as they would not be unique to him them. Hope that helps

batey · 06/03/2003 19:38

Just to update, and say thanks for all the ideas........gave Big Sis 40 presents, some of which were "home made" tapes, photos, jewellery etc. She really loved them all, and her dss helped her open them. Much hilarity caused when ds2 opened a sexy pair of knickers! Boys and pants eh!! Thanks again for all the inspiration.
