I am feeling an urge to start a MN survey - As soon as people discover how old my ds is they look at me in amazement - he was born in November 2004 so is nearly 3.7 but everybody assumes he is at least 5 or 6 - would you all be so kind as to measure your dc's of similar ages and post their height here so I can see for myself if he is really tall?
I admit that I have been trying to compare him against other children when we are out but without knowing their ages, my research seems pointless.
I know that in the grand scheme of things his height does not really matter but as the coroner at my dh's inquest suggested Marfans Syndrome ds's height has been playing on my mind - Thank You for your assistance MN

Hi Mummy2TandF, can you plot his height in your red book? I think the charts go up to age 5. It should give you an idea if he is particularly tall.

Sorry i don't have a ds of that age!

laidbackinengland · 02/06/2008 21:58

At 3.7 My DS2 (who is the biggest of my 3) was 107 cm - which is just over the 98th centile. Hope this helps ?

PinkPurple · 02/06/2008 22:01

is this of any use?

Can my dd, born Dec 2004 help? She's the tallest in her nursery class (boys and girls) and was just measured at 104.5 cms

Mummy2TandF · 02/06/2008 22:12

Thank You, if my convertions(sp) for feet and inches is correct and going by that clothing chart, ds is quite tall - but am not too sure if he is extremely tall IYSWIM? I wonder how much on average they grow in a month/year etc .... ds is very nearly 3ft 8ins, which I worked out to be around 115cms - so he does seem to be the height of a 6 yr old according to that chart, no wonder people see him as a little tinker, they have no idea that he isn't even 4 until November

Does he have any other symptoms of Marfans - there are lots of other diagnostic indicators apart from height ?

Mummy2TandF · 02/06/2008 22:33

laidbackinengland - he is still so young and my dh was 36 and had no severe symptoms of Marfans which is why it took the pathologist to bring it to my attention, but looking back my dh did have some other symptoms. Ds on the other hand does get out of breath fairly easily for a 3.7yr old, he is quite flat footed, he complains sometimes that his joints ache, he has a slight pidgeon chest on one side but not too bad and dh and I always thought that he had something wrong with his pallet, and people do say he has a longish face ... but all these could be me being paranoid now Marfans has been mentioned - I have found a specialist who is prepared to test both of the dc's for Marfans, so am just waiting for the appointment for that. I just thought I would conduct my own little mn experiment

Good luck with that - my brother and I were both tall for our ages and were tested for Marfans - but didn't have it.

Mummy2TandF · 02/06/2008 22:45

I am amazed that Marfans was suggested for you and your brother - it seems to something my GP had never even heard of, mind you nor had I

laidbackinengland · 02/06/2008 22:47

I suppose a GP only needs to have seen it once or twice to know about it. We both had very lax joints and that was seen as a concern with our height - although I'm not particulalry tall now !

madamez · 02/06/2008 22:50

My DS was born in Sept 04 and is pretty tall, people comment on his height and some people have assumed he is a couple of years older than he actually is. But then his dad is 6'4" tall so I tend to put it down to that.

Mummy2TandF · 02/06/2008 23:02

madamez - don't google Marfans!! How tall is your lo? just out of interest. Before DH passed away, when people commented on ds's height I too used to say "oh, his Dad is 6'2" ... please don't worry, I didn't mean to worry anybody. My dh was 6'2" but only 10st 4lbs, which apparently is another sign - it's not just about being tall it's the slenderness as well

ds1 was born dec 04 and is 103cm. He is the tallest for his age in nursery. He is only about 1" wide though!!

Ds2 was 2 last week and is set to be taller.

DP is over 6foot so I think thats where the height is coming from, as I am only 5'2".

madamez · 03/06/2008 00:26

Actually, I did go and google it - and feel better as apart from tallness DS hasn;t got any of the symptoms (though I have scoliosis). He is about 101cm I think, notably taller than other kids his age but his dad is 6'4, I am 5'6 with big feet (which sort of suggests tallness in my genetic history somewhere)...
But I have known plenty of tall skinny men with no particular health problems other than occasional self-inflicted ones.

solo · 03/06/2008 00:35

My Ds is now 9.10 and I've just looked in his red book. At 3 years and 8 months he was 114cm...Way above the top centile mark.
He's now 5'4", very slim build, but very healthy.

chicaguapa · 03/06/2008 00:57

DS was born 5/11/04 and he's just scraping 1m and people think he's tall!!

MrsJohnCusack · 03/06/2008 07:00

DD was born Dec 04 and is usually the tallest child about of her age
she's 104cm

bigmouthstrikesagain · 03/06/2008 07:14

My ds was born Aug 04 and is 108cm so tall for his age but not off the charts - I am 5'8" and dh 5'6" so it seems ds (and dd who is 88cm at 2) are both taking after my side of family.

I had not heard of Marfans either, though it doesn't sound like my dc's are candidates.

Good luck with your research Mummy2tandf and the assessment of your ds.

Mummy2TandF · 03/06/2008 08:43

thank You all again, my research is ongoing Solo - it sounds like your ds is the nearest in height to mine ... of course the height isn't necessarily a sign of Marfans, apparently there are Marfan sufferers who are just 5ft - but it does seem to be one of the most visual indicators. I hope that I get some more responses today to aid my experiment

Mummy2, my family are all tall(except my mum). My ' little brother' is 6'8" tall. I used to be a touch under 5'11", but I seem to shrink after pregnancy, so I'm not so tall these days I don't know much about Marfan's, but don't think Ds has it. He is very tall and extremely slim(wish I could fatten him up a bit, he eats more than I do - no mean feat!) he does have a long face, but then I don't think it's out of place as my face is quite long.
Good luck with your study here. It's interesting to see that there are so many tall lo's.

nelix2000 · 04/06/2008 16:13

my wee boy is 16 months....way off the age range here but is creepin up to 3ft (91cm)tall....he is huge.....but so is his father! he is skinny and people comment on it ALL the time, I feed him as much as he will eat and it all seems to go into growing!!!
