how can we make a toboggen - quick before the snow melts!

It's snowing. The roads are too slippery for me to venture out to the shops and I don't want to spend pounds on a toboggen, anyway. It's not as if it will get much use throughout the year.

However, we have some lovely gentle slopes round here, and with a sprinkling of snow they make great toboggen runs.

So any ideas? tea trays? large flattened cardboard boxes? Any refinements or safety recommendations to pass on?

The best sledge I ever was on was an old car bonnet, but I suppose that is not very practical! Took 8 of us at a pinch and was BRILL!
Trays are good, or sitting INSIDE a bin liner (can get a bit cold and uncomfy on the rear end), and if you can rig up a bit of string to hol on to on a tray you will make it marginally safer!
But just go out and have FUN. We don't have any snow and I am a bit jealous - North of Scotland should get it first!

If you van get them, empty fertiliser sacks (or the type that garden centres sell compost in) are better than bin liners.

tigermoth · 08/01/2003 11:18

Ks, black ice is truly nasty. I pray I will steer clear of this. Hope those painkillers take effect - at least you've missed a probable bad commute into work today.

Bin liners sound good - or garden sacks, as you say Gill - they are much stronger. I might take a slow, careful walk to the garden centre shortly.

Ouch ks! Poor you, hope those painkillers are doing the trick and you feel better soon.

Tigermoth, if you've any of those large plastic toy storage boxes the lids would be perfect. Some have even got rope handles. I have very happy memories of bombing down the hill in Greenwich Park in a fertiliser sack. Just cut 2 holes for the legs in the bottom corners - looks like a giant plastic nappy but works very well!

the blow up giant rubber rings you buy on holiday make great sledges.just sit your bum in the hole.they do eventually get a hole though.
we had hours of fun on ours a couple of years ago and loads of people were telling us how good a sled it made.
have fun

Ouch ks - are you rubbing your bum with lots of arnica - it really will help.

SoupDragon · 08/01/2003 14:10

Or take the arnica pillules if you can't rub the cream in.

Sounds horribly painful.
